Smith hits winning form again on Hickstead return
Thursday 24 July 2025

Kirkcudbright-based James Smith enjoyed a hugely successful trip to Hickstead’s Agria Royal International Horse Show last summer, when he won three classes at the historic venue – and this year, he’s making good on his plan to repeat the feat, taking top honours in this morning’s Brilliance Horse Auction Salver with Juno Rose 23.
“‘Rosie’, in particular, had a great show last year – she loves it here,” said James. “Last year was her first time at Hickstead, but she proved again today that she really enjoys it.”
The diminutive mare bested 37 competitors – many of them considerably more imposing than she. But despite her small stature, her aptitude for speed meant that the 1.40m fences, and Hickstead’s famously capacious International Arena, proved light work.
“She’s less than 16 hands, but she’s just naturally fast. She lands and she’s looking for the next jump, and you don’t have to do anything crazy – she just keeps travelling,” James said.
James brings three exciting entries to Hickstead this week, as he aims to continue the winning streak he’s enjoyed since his return to the venue.
“When I came here last year, but I actually hadn’t been to Hickstead since I was in the 138cms, so it had been quite a few years! There’s no better ring, though, and there’s such a good atmosphere. It’s unique.”
The Agria Royal International Horse Show takes place at Hickstead in West Sussex from 23-27 July. Tickets are available at the gate or from www.hickstead.co.uk. The action will also be shown live on ClipMyHorse.TV.
