GB Team NAF place third in CSIO3* Nations Cup of Vejer de la Frontera, Spain.

Great Britain, riding under the sponsor banner of Team NAF today claimed third place on the podium in the CSIO3* Nations Cup of Vejer de la Frontera, Spain.

A difficult dog-leg line of skinny stile to the open water caught out many riders of the 15 teams tackling course-designer Javier Trenor’s 12-fence 1.50m track in round one. All four Brits came home on four faults apiece for a total of 12 faults alongside Ireland and Canada at the halfway stage. They sat in fifth behind Ireland on time. The host country Spain stood at the top of the leaderboard on a zero score with Belgium and Colombia in second and third on eight faults apiece. There was still plenty to play for.

Pathfinder Robert Murphy with Andrew Bradshaw and Sandra Low-Mitchell’s 10-year-old How Easy (Talan x Quite Easy) fell foul of the tricky stile second time out to again finish on four faults.

Second rider of the team Joe Fernyhough came home on eight faults in round two, including unluckily tapping out the final vertical topped with a skinny plank, with his father Rowland Fernyhough’s 10-year-old Calcourt Particle (Spartacus TN x Lasino).

The pressure was on the final two riders, both victim to the tricky line of stile to open water in round one. But they came up trumps and pulled two magnificent rounds out of the bag.

Tim Gredley and Unex Competition Yard Ltd’s Der Senaat 10-year-old Medoc De Toxandria had a foot in the water in round one but took a little more time on the approach second time out to pull off a clear round.

It was all down to anchor Skye Higgin on Bernadette Lejeune’s 9-year-old Djordania Du Tillard (Air Jordan x Diamant De Semilly). They fell foul of the stile in the first round but made no such mistake in round two, supplying Britain’s second foot-perfect round to leap up the order to third place.

Chef d’Equipe Di Lampard was delighted. “They all worked very well together and the experience they gained from here will stand them in good stead going forward. It was a great result from 15 teams,” she said.

“Robert was on his first senior Nations Cup and jumped solid rounds, Joe, on his second Nations Cup after being on the winning team in Gorla Minore, Italy, put in good rounds. We needed clear rounds and Tim, on his first Nations Cup for many years, and Skye, who also jumped for clear and four in Prague, both handled the pressure extremely well and delivered.”

Two of Spain’s riders provided double clears and with another rider on just four faults, was not required to start their final rider and the delighted Spanish won on home ground on a four-fault total.

Colombia finished second on 12 faults with Britain in third on a total of 16 faults, beating Ireland – also on 16 faults – to the podium spot by 2.91 seconds.
