British Showjumping express their deep condolences to the family of Paddy McMahon who passed away at the age of 87 on Sunday, 4th April in the company of his three children Patricia, Elizabeth and Peter.

During the 1970’s Paddy became a household name partnering Penwood Forgemill with whom he won Individual Gold for Great Britain at the European Championships in 1973 when it was hosted at Hickstead.   The same year he also won the King George V Gold Cup at the Royal International Horse Show as well as being a member of the winning team that lifted the Aga Khan Trophy at the Royal Dublin Horse Show.

The coveted Aga Khan trophy was won by Great Britain on three consecutive occasions between 1973 and 1975, a feat that meant the winning nation could bring the trophy home. Paddy and Penwood Forgemill were instrumental in this achievement having been on both the 1973 and 1975 teams.

As a combination they made numerous nations cup team appearances on the global stage with great success which also saw them notch up a number of Grand Prix wins.

Iain Graham, Chief Executive for British Showjumping said “Paddy was a great advocate for the sport and would have inspired so many to up riding and showjumping as their sport of choice. It is with great sadness that we learnt of his passing and our thoughts are with his family during this difficult time.”
