Helen Tredwell and Larksong take the top spot in the International Stairway at Devon County Show

Last year’s International Stairway Series winner Helen Tredwell from Finmere, Buckinghamshire got her 2019 campaign off to a flying start. Sitting third in the table before Devon County following her 3rd place at Royal Berkshire Show in September, Helen steered her own and Alan Tredwell’s British-bred mare Larksong to victory in the second leg of the International Stairway Series which took place on Friday.

Five of the initial twenty-five starters jumped clear around course designer Krissy Speller’s twelve fence-track to make it through to the jump-off. All five combinations produced a double clear and the leaderboard was looking tight before Helen and Larksong shaved off 2.75 seconds from their closest rivals, Harriet Nuttall and Rupert Nuttall’s Galway Bay Jed, who posted a time of 54.12 seconds, pushing them into the runner up spot.

Third place was secured by Adrian Speight and Judith Whitham’s Millfield Baloney who crossed the finish line in 55.76 seconds. Fourth place went to Angelie Von Essen with David Quigley’s Luikan Q. Helen also took fifth place with Colin Garratt’s Sebastian VII.

The International Stairway takes place across a number of county shows where winning combinations accrue League Points that count towards the Final which takes place at the British Showjumping National Championships in August at Stoneleigh Park. The series culminates with a high profile championships where three Horse of the Year Show International Wild Cards are allocated as well as it being where the sports National Champion is crowned.
