The KBIS Insurance Senior British Novice Championship was the first to kick-start the finals taking place in the Grand Ring at the British Showjumping National Championships and Stoneleigh Horse Show.
The series attracts an impressive number of competitors throughout the season and the final was heavily contested with seventy-five entrants moving forward into the final at the NAEC, Stoneleigh Park.
The first final in the Grand Ring got off to a flying start with twenty-nine clear rounds calling for a jump-off. Carl Freeman from Rugeley, Staffordshire, the first rider to attempt the jump off, completed the round in an incredible 50.05 seconds with no rails down on Eriggy, a 6 year-old bay mare owned by Claire Commins.
As the riders took their turns in attempts to beat Freeman’s time, it began to look as though nobody could. The final rider in the jump-off, Emma Jo- Slater from High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, riding 6 year-old bay mare April Love, attempted the difficult course and flew around in a time of 49.22, just beating Freeman’s time by 0.83 seconds.
Riders and spectators alike had been on the edge of their seats during the final class of the day, setting the scene for a great competition over the course of the week.
Catching up with Emma and owner Robert Crisp after the awards ceremony; Emma explained that she and April Love’s owner were undecided before the jump off about their strategy, but were relieved when their risk paid off.
Emma appeared overwhelmed and told us “It’s just a rush of adrenaline and I’m leaving today with a very chuffed owner.”
KBIS have sponsored the Senior British Novice Championship since 2009 and have helped develop this grassroots series, which now attracts over 40,000 first round starters each year.
