Chepstow CSI2*
Tuesday 07 May 2013
Wales’ first CSI two star was an all-out success – good entries, top-class competition and brilliant sunshine. Seven nations were represented, but it was predictably British heavy and they took the lion’s share of prizes.
Rob Maguire and the Grosso Z nine-year-old Zidane VIII claimed the feature, world-ranking grand prix in an exciting, nine horse jump-off. Jessica Mendoza, 17, had set a sizzling target on Spirit T, a ride of seven weeks and owned jointly with breeder John Roberts, with a risky, flying gallop to the last. But Rob was faster, again flying to the last. “He’s so careful and he jumps better rolling on” he said.
Children, Junior & Young Rider Chef d’Equipe Corinne Bracken was impressed with the results. “This allowed us to see the competitive side of our riders against seniors in International competition, and six junior and young riders were in the top ten – excellent.”
Jessica also claimed the small tour speed with recent acquisition Balougio III, winner of three classes in Olivia Nova, Spain.“He’s forward-going and always looking for the next fence” she said.
Nicole Pavitt scored a winning double. Victor Blue headed a strong, 66-entry big tour speed and the effervescent Amaryllis Van de Heffink took the small two-phase. “Victor’s super-careful and makes everything easy” said Nicole, who has ridden Ginnie Quine’s 11-year-old for two years. Amaryllis was crowned Welsh Masters ladies champion two weeks earlier.“She loves it here” said Nicole, who has embryo transfer intentions using this 13-year-old mare with Don VHP Z.
Sammie-Jo Coffin snatched the big accumulator with Willem De Lux.“He’s naturally fast” said Cornwall-based Sammie-Jo, who is aiming the Lupicor 10-year-old at Hickstead’s Derby meeting, venue of last year’s biggest win, the Derby Trophy.
First-drawn Richard Davenport captured the medium tour grand prix in the 22-strong jump-off with Martin Dawes’ Nelson Z. Placed in Spain, this was the first show since for the big-striding stallion by Nureyev.“There’s nothing he can’t jump, but he’s not usually this fast” said Richard.
Chloe Aston, 18, posted a medium two-phase win on the dynamic eight-year-old Amigo T. “He’s incredibly fast and jumps bigger fences better” said Chloe, who has perfected her craft abroad, “They’re so quick you learn to ride at a fast pace.”
Kerry Brennan, 21, seized the medium speed on Wellington M at their second International meeting. They were fourth in Henglo’s big tour grand prix in December.“He’s consistent and careful, I can trust him” said Kerry.
Alfie Bradstock and accumulator specialist Foxglade Little Lady, Graham Fletcher’s Busk Hill Gunnar seven-year-old homebred, added another to their tally with the small accumulator.
British-based Irishman Richard Howley won three – Wanant (big tour jump-off), Torboy Magic (small accumulator) and Zantiago RV (small grand prix).
Viewing trials
Millie Allen dominated the pony trials with a double, winning the initial jump-off class on her European gold medallist ride Song Girl and the grand prix on Scoubidou. “They’re very different rides, Song Girl’s laid-back and Scoubidou is bouncy with so much energy” said Millie, who rode Scoubidou two years ago until he was sold to Germany. He returned in December to sell.
Emily Ward was second in the grand prix on speed class winner Wizard. It was a busy show. With two thirds and a grand prix second on Witch in the International classes, she took the leading rider award – a £1,000 worth of Equiline clothing.
Selector Clare Whitaker was pleased with the standard.“[Course-designer] Alan Wade did a fantastic job, the pony grand prix was difficult” she said, “We haven’t got a massive pool of riders to choose from, but those we have got are good.”
The children-on-horses standard was high, with several posting consistent clears. Jodie Hall-McAteer lifted the grand prix on Dazzle – better known with John and Louise Whitaker.
“I can’t thank Louise enough – for sharing the ride and schooling her so well” said Jodie, 12, who made the massive step from 128cm to the 16.2hh Dazzle with apparent ease.
Sons of Olympians also made their mark. Harry Charles, son of Peter, was second and third in the grand prix with Cherona Z and Milord D’Elle, also jumping double clear in the Nations Cup competition on both. And Sydney 2000 British team member Carl Edwards’ son Carmen, another double clear jumper, won the speed section on Touche. “This year’s children-on-horses is strong” said Clare, “It’s great to have the depth, choosing the European team is going to be difficult.”
