Two mares share a joint win in the Horse First Supplements National 4 year old Championship Final

Saturday 11 August 2018

The Porsche Centre Solihull Championship Arena 2 played host to the Horse First Supplements National 4 year old Championship Final today at the British Showjumping National Championships 2018.The Championship saw the stars of tomorrow compete under the watchful eyes of the judge Mark Williams and Liz Edgar.

The 33 young horses were initially ridden on the flat and then over a course of jumps. A total of 21 combinations were called back for a second inspection and jumped over six fences. After much deliberation the judges decided on two joint winners; Miss Marcolus ridden by Jessica Botham and Skylandria Z ridden by Ben Carus, having scored equal points overall.

Speaking of Miss Marcolus, Jessica explained: “She was bred by Sharon Barns and her dam is Miss Ramexico, a Grade A mare which Adam Botham used to ride. We knew Simon Nicholson who had Marcolas G, so we decided to use him as the sire. She has only been broken in for four to five months ago but from her very first jump, her technique was so correct so we immediately said we’d enter this type of class.” Having produced a lovely double clear, Jessica was delighted to take the joint win: “We ended up being joint winners in a similar class at Weston Lawns and then we brought her here. We’ll maybe jump some Newcomers classes with her but we’ll take it easy. We have her half-sister too, Silent Whisper who is three year old, so we’ll be starting her next.”

Joint winning mare, Skylandria Z, is owned by Danielle Ryder, who explains: “I have her in joint ownership with Willem Van Hoof and her mother has competed internationally at 1.40m classes so we have high hopes for her.”

Ben continues: “She has only been ridden for two months so to be able to have learnt so much that she goes in and wins this just shows she is really one of a kind and I couldn’t have asked for anything more. I couldn’t have asked much more of a four year old. I start off all of Danielle’s youngsters and I am really grateful I get to ride such quality horses.”
