Pony Measuring and Competency Requirements

British Showjumping is introducing new guidelines for ponies regarding Measuring Certificates and competency requirements for 2024.

Pony Measuring

Following the introduction of the FEI pony measuring system, British Showjumping has been monitoring the advantages and the opportunity to align a national measuring process that mirrors the international system.

From 1st January, we will be introducing a British Showjumping national measuring system for all ponies who require a height certificate to compete.  Ponies who have a FEI Lifetime certificate, a valid Interim FEI height certificate or a JMB Full height certificate, will not require a further measurement to compete in national classes.

Ponies with an Annual JMB certificate will require a British Showjumping Measurement certificate (either Lifetime or Interim) to compete in National classes.  There will be a temporary relaxation of the requirements to have a valid measurement certificate until 1st April 2024 by which point the new British Showjumping measuring process will be in place.

There are several advantages of following the FEI system: Due to the measurement being carried out by two vets, once a certificate is issued it cannot be challenged by third parties, and there is a tolerance in the height allowed so that ponies can be presented for measuring with shoes on.

There will be at least one British Showjumping measuring facility in each region with measuring sessions being available from March onwards.  Further details will be announced in February to include dates, venues and costs.

Competency requirements

Winter 128cm & HOYS 128cm:

To be eligible to compete in the Winter 128cm or Horse of the Year show 128cm qualifiers at the relevant pony premiers, the pony/rider combination must have two double clears at 1m on their record since the 1st August 2022.

Winter 138cm, HOYS 138cm:

To be eligible to compete in the Winter 138cm or Horse of the Year show 138cm qualifiers at the relevant pony premiers, the pony/rider combination must have two double clears at 1.10m on their record since the 1st August 2022.

Winter JA & Pony Showjumper:

To be eligible to compete in the Winter JA or Pony Showjumper of the year qualifiers at the relevant pony premiers, the pony/rider combination must have two double clears at 1.20m or above on their record since the 1st August 2022. FEI results also count towards your double clears. The Pony Showjumper is open to JA & JC ponies.

Winter JC/JD:

To be eligible to compete in the Winter JC/JD qualifiers at the relevant pony premiers, the pony/rider combination must have two double clears at 1.10m on their record since the 1st August 2022. The Pony must also be JC or JD as at the 1st January in the year of the qualifier.

We are currently working on updating competencies on to members online accounts. Competencies will be updated on your online account around ten days after obtaining the second double clear.  If you believe the competency has not been updated, please e-mail the shows department at shows@britishshowjumping.co.uk stating the pony and rider name/membership numbers and one of the team will look into this for you. You can jump these qualifiers once you have obtained the two double clears required and these do not need to be obtained each year (e.g. If you have two double clears at 1m in 2022, you can compete in the HOYS 128cm qualifier for as long as the rider is eligible to ride that height of pony).
