Robert Jefferies Jumps to Victory in his Inaugural Equissage Pulse Senior British Novice Second Round at Dean Valley

Forty horse and rider combinations headed to Cheshire’s Dean Valley this weekend to contest in the Equissage Pulse Senior British Novice Second Round, in a bid to clinch their spot in the Championship Final at the British Showjumping National Championships this year. In order to compete in this second round competition all horses needed to have jumped double clears, in at least four Equissage Pulse British Novice First Round competitions since 1 May 2023.

Course Builder Gillian Milner’s first round track proved tricky for some, but 17 combinations made light work of it to advance to the second round, where the competition stepped up another level. Ten of the starting 17 rode their way to the jump off, but two combinations ensured they stood head and shoulders above the rest. Robert Jefferies on Figo MH and Joshua Bailey on Frankly Dynamic posted to the only triple clears of the class, separated by a mere 0.3 seconds.

It was second-round-first-timer Robert Jefferies who crossed the line in the fastest time, stopping the clock at 43.39 seconds. Commenting on his win Robert said: “This was my first time getting the double clears at Senior British Novice, and so my first ever second round, and my first time at Dean Valley! I bought Figo unbroken from Amanda Carpenter at Merllyn Sport Horses a few years ago. Amanda and Iwan actually train me, so it’s great that they have that connection with both me and the horse. To have this and go on to win our first second round is amazing.

“I felt very confident going into the jump off because I know the horse is remarkable. I broke him myself and have done all the work with Amanda, Iwan and some local trainers. It has been such a journey which is why its fantastic to know that all the work is paying off. I’m just enjoying the journey.”

Hot on Robert’s heels was Joshua Bailey on Sophie Newman’s Frankly Dynamic, narrowly missing out on the top spot in a time of 43.69 seconds, but still claiming his place in the Equissage Pulse British Novice Final in August.
