The Haddon Training British Grooms Awards

At the recent British Breeders Awards Dinner in London, showjumping groom Daniel Tarpey was presented with the runners-up prize for the Haddon Training British Grooms Award.
Daniel was nominated for the award by his employer, Reading based Laura Mantel, who highlighted that since Daniel joined her team that he has transformed the overall appearance of her yard, the wellbeing of the horses and above all the amazing way in which he carries out the daily chores in the most diligent but efficient and time effective manner.
Laura continues, "Daniel has twelve horses under his care who are all fed, groomed and looked after as if it were the only one on the yard and his attention to detail is exemplary, he is ‘horse aware’ and picks up when a horse is just a little bit ‘not right’ and this makes him more than just an excellent groom but a real ‘horseman’ and he has managed a particular mare that is prone to colic extremely well even teaching her to drink at shows – something she would not do previously. Most importantly, how many grooms ‘forget’ its their day off and turn up for work - yes Daniel has!"
On receiving his engraved award and £150 cash prize from Chris Hewlett, Managing Director of Haddon Training, a thrilled Daniel commented, “It is fantastic that Haddon Training are sponsoring these grooms awards as you feel that the good grooms are receiving the recognition they deserve and I believe it gives other grooms something to aim for. Being a groom is very hard work and having these awards is an acknowledgement of the respect that a good groom holds. Since receiving my award and the publicity that it has generated the local Pony Club has asked me to come and give a talk on my career as a groom and this again highlights how these awards are giving opportunities that perhaps we wouldn’t get otherwise.”
Oscar Mayhew-Sanders, who was nominated by Tim Stockdale in this category, received a highly commended certificate.
There were four categories for which grooms could be nominated for: The Haddon Training British Grooms Award, The Haddon Training Team GBR Grooms Award, The Haddon Training Yard Manager Award and The Haddon Training Apprentice Award.
“The standard of nominations received in the four categories was extremely high and along with my co-judges, Jane Holderness-Roddam and Jenny Ellis we deliberated for a number of hours of who should be the worthy winners and feel that they have all made an outstanding contribution in their careers or at the start of their career in the equestrian industry”, said Chris Hewlett.
