The riders representing Team Europe got off to a great start today in round one of the Team competition at the Nanjing Youth Olympic Games. The performances delivered by the team today sees them sit in first place overnight on zero faults.
Corinne Bracken, Chef d’Equipe, takes up the reins to fill us in on the day's events:
The course was great and asked plenty of questions. It was built up to height with a normal time allowed and the first rider Matias Alvaro (Italy) went clear. This was then followed by a clear from Michael Duffy (Ireland). British representative Jake Saywell was next to go and his horse warmed up very well. Unfortunately, as the horse approached the first fence, he began to shake his head and kicked the first fence out!! Jake kept his cool the whole way round and was unlucky to collect 4 faults at fence nine to leave him on 8 faults.
In this competition there are five riders and three scores count. With two clears already in the bag, fourth rider Filip Agren (Sweden) achieved our goal by jumping a clear to leave the team on zero faults overnight. Lisa Nooren (The Netherlands) went for a schooling round as all the horses had to jump the first round.
We watched the videos to see where we needed to improve tomorrow and then headed for Gymnastics where Team GB won Gold in the mens all round individual!
We're looking forward to round two tomorrow!!
