New Years Honours List – Congratulations to Nick Skelton
Saturday 31 December 2016
British Showjumping extend their warmest congratulations to Nick Skelton, who has been awarded a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in the Queen’s New Year Honours List 2017.
Nick, who made history last summer when he won GB’s first ever Individual Gold medal for Showjumping at Rio 2016, aged 58 years, has been awarded for his services to equestrianism.
Iain Graham, Chief Executive for British Showjumping commented “With an international competition career that has spanned more than four decades, and at times against great adversity, Nick’s success has served as a great inspiration to people of all ages on a global level. To have come back from a broken neck injury sustained in 2000 and then win Team Gold at London 2012 followed by Individual Gold at Rio 2016 is inspiring in the extreme. We couldn’t be more delighted for Nick that this has been recognised with the awarding of a CBE”.
This morning Nick, who celebrated his 59th birthday yesterday, commented “To say I feel honoured and overwhelmed would be an understatement. I have always felt extremely fortunate that I have been able to build a career within a sport I am passionate about and it is this that has driven me on, no matter what obstacles have come my way. I am incredibly proud to have this honour bestowed on me and I hope that I can continue inspiring others, whether it be through my competitive riding or via the charities that I support”.
Congratulations are also extended to Lee Pearson who receives a Knighthood, Charlotte Dujardin and Sophie Christiansen who receive a CBE and Anne Dunham who has received an OBE.
