Young British Showjumpers Shine at the Welsh Masters

A host of talented young International showjumpers competed at The David Broome Event Centre this weekend, the venue for the 2012 Welsh Masters. Each class had good numbers of entries and competition was fierce, especially in the Welsh Masters Ladies Final, the Welsh Masters Gents Final and the PCA Grand Slam Summer Grand Prix including 1.40m Welsh Masters Final.
In the Welsh Master Ladies Final, twenty five of the forty seven starters made it through to the hotly contested jump off, which saw only nine combinations keep all the fences up to produce a second clear round. The Ladies Final was eventually topped by 18-year-old Carian Scudamore from Cardigan in Dyfed, who rode Angel III (owned by Mr Nigel Scudamore) to victory, wiping two seconds off the time of second placed Julie Andrews on Miss Lyckad.
Former Junior European Gold medallist Carian and Angel III cleared the jump off course in a time of just 31.52 seconds to scoop the win. Carian will now be aiming for selection onto the British Showjumping International Young Rider Squad.
The Ladies Final was swiftly followed by the Welsh Masters Gents Final, in which sixteen of the thirty-five starters contested the jump off. Only seven of these sixteen riders cleared the jump off fences and the Gents Final was won by 22-year-old Daniel Moseley from Worksop in Nottinghamshire. Daniel rode the 10-year-old bay gelding, Billy Grand (owned by the Billy Stud), to the top of the leaderboard in the Gents Final and with only 0.30 seconds separating the top three, Daniel’s time of 32.68 seconds pipped the second placed time of 32.82 seconds.
Daniel currently holds the Queen Elizabeth II Cup, which he won at last year’s The Longines Royal International Horse Show on Billy Grand. Daniel is currently based with top International showjumper, William Funnell.
On Sunday, the venue hosted the PCA Grand Slam Summer Grand Prix including the 1.40m Welsh Masters Final, in which forty one starters vied for the £1,500 first prize. Nineteen of the forty one combinations jumped clear in the first round and went through to the jump off. From these nineteen combinations, 10 horses and riders produced a second clear round and it was 23-year-old Nicole Pavitt from Crawley, West Sussex who won the class on 11-year-old bay mare Gemmaire Precious II (owned by Mrs Sandra Pavitt) in a time of just 35.94 seconds.
