Plevin British Showjumping Scope Festival 2012 – Wednesday Round Up

Thursday 30 August 2012

Hopes and dreams were realised and lost as championship titles were awarded on day four of the week-long extravaganza.

Rachael Connor risked galloping the length of the arena to the final fence – an imposing multi-coloured wall – to take the West coast Express Ladies title with Beckham IV.

“He’s super-careful and trusts me” said Rachael after recording her biggest win on the Indoctro son owned by Michelle Rothwell.

Louise Saywell, second last year, again took second with Winner IV.

Daniel Moseley was deceptively quick to claim the Midland Equestrian Gents Championship with the increasingly consistent Billy On Show.

“He’s a sensitive horse but is gaining confidence each time out” said Daniel, who rides for William Funnell’s Billy Stud.

The long, final run to the last fence again came into play, but Daniel was economically neat as he shaved corners and sliced almost three seconds from second-placed Peter Murphy on Del Fuego.

Hayley McCaie’s Mister Tom IV has an obvious liking for the championship arena at the Plevin British Showjumping Scope Festival – he recorded his third championship win in the HBF Equestrian 1.30m classic.

The 11-year-old has previously taken the Katherine James Novice title in 2007 and was crowned the Grade B champion two years later.

“I’m stepping him up slowly to 1.40m” said Hayley, 22, who is aiming for the Murkas World Class Programme Under 23 at Olympia.

“Last year was an amazing experience, I want to be there again” she said.

Bryony Ward capitalised on her KBIS British Novice champion Hay Que Fabulosa with a second title.  The ultra-careful British-bred mare made short work of a strong five-year-old track to take the Equiport five-year-old Milton title.

“It’s the biggest she’s jumped to date, but she wasn’t fazed” said Bryony, who jointly owns the Utah Van Erpekom daughter with breeder Rowan Willis.

Harry Charles is already displaying the cool, calm attributes of his Olympic Gold Medallist father Peter, and with ice-cool precision, took the Geoffrey Robinson Jubilee Open Pony Championship aboard Murka’s Moneymaker.

This pony, originally ridden by Jessie Drea and purchased in Ireland, is through to the HOYS Pony Showjumper of the year in October after a super win at Wales and West HPI show.

The Pink Equine Steeping Stones series has grown in popularity and stature, and championships were hard fought.

John Ellis and Tantassaig Girl executed a flying round to take the 138cm equivalent, beating Sophie Hillier’s effort on Honey III by 0.23 seconds.

Diminutive Matilda Deakin outpaced all on the evergreen Forever Penny to snatch the 128cm section by an impressive one and half second from Robyn Woodward on Harwel Sinbad.

And the Deakin sisters were on form.  Not to be outdone, Kerstin claimed her own sash and rug in the Graham Heath Construction Under 16 Championship with Cashmira.
