Young Rider European Championships get under way

Five members of the Tretorn International Young Rider Squad travelled over to Jardy, France earlier on in the week to take part in the 2010 FEI Young Rider European Championships.

Thursday saw Great Britain's William Whitaker take second place in the first of the Individual Qualifiers, which set him up well for today’s team competition.

First to fly the flag for Great Britain was 21 year old Daniel Moseley who iscurrently based with William Funnell in Dorking, Surrey. Daniel and Carol Toliver’s 12 year old bay stallion Kepi d’Elle didn’t get off to the best of starts, but they both dug deep and only had 1 fence and a time fault in the second round.

Next to jump was 20 year old Joe Clayton, from Huddersfield, West Yorkshire riding his own 11 year old bay gelding Saveur. Joe and Saveur produced the best of the British rounds jumping a first round clear and lowering just a single pole for four faults in the second.

21 year old William Whitaker from Huddersfield, West Yorkshire was the next British rider to take on the Young Rider course riding his father’s (Ian) 11 year old bay gelding Sarlino. William showed his class and coolness under pressure by only lowering a pole in both rounds.

Last to jump for Great Britain was 20 year old Daniel Neilson from Essex riding Celia Mason’s 10 year old bay gelding Attack II. The pair lowered 3 fences in the first round but came out fighting for the second to jump a foot perfect clear round.

Finishing in fifth place Great Britain were disappointingly outside of the medals however the focus in now very much in the Individual competition which takes place on Sunday in which we have Joe Clayton, William Whitaker and Daniel Neilson all taking part
