BS Area 12 Annual Awards Ball 2018

The BS Area 12 Annual Awards Ball took place on the 15th February in the Gosforth Park Suite at Newcastle Racecourse. We arrived at the venue to the pleasant surprise of evening racing taking place and our room looked out straight across the paddock to the finish line.

Members and guests arrived from 7:30 and a delicious three course dinner was served at 8:00. Northern RDO Michelle Clough began the presentation by introducing the new committee; Joanne Marlor who has remained on the committee as Show Secretary, Jacqui Cooper who has joined as Area 12 Academy Coordinator, Michelle Frizelle as Social Secretary and myself as newly appointed Area Rep.

Philippa McKeever gave an update on the academy which has recently moved locations to Philippa’s new base at Stampley Moss Farm. The academy sent a junior team to the 2018 National Finals at Stoneleigh which came a respectable 4th place. Michelle then presented the academy members with medals to recognise their achievements in 2018. Philippa annually awards a prize to a junior and a senior academy member to recognize their hard work and progress made during the year. This year the junior award went to Ella Jackson and the senior award to Sophie Bass.

Only the Junior Club trophy was awarded this year going to Lily Sibbald and Loughnatousa Orange, Lily has been competing locally and qualified for the BS National Championships where she came 3rd in the Junior 70cm Final.

Moving on to the national awards this saw a double win for Poppy Deakin and Munsboro Plunkett, a combination who had a very successful year including wins in the Mini Major at the Great Yorkshire Show & the 128cm Grand Prix at Bolesworth International also coming second in finals at both HOYS and Olympia. Poppy also won the 138cm Open Pony trophy with Astral Ruben and took the Overall Pony Rider Champion for 2018.

The Novice Pony Trophy was won by Charlie Parker and Secret Fortunes, a pair who have progressed through the Area 12 Academy and formed part of the Junior Academy Team at the National Finals in 2018.

Billy Luther ended his final year on ponies by retaining the 148cm Open and Intermediate Pony trophies for the second year running with the consistent Crème De La Crème and William Luther took Leading Pony Owner. Billy and Crème De La Crème have been a partnership competing BS since 2015, starting at British Novice and progressing through to JA in a short space of time. The pair have had many wins together leading to their most prestigious accolade of qualifying and competing in the Pony Newcomers & Foxhunter finals at HOYS in 2017.

The Novice Horse Trophy was awarded to Helen Hogg and the now 5yo stallion Ouragan of the Paddocks whose owner David Perry also received the Young Horse Owner trophy. Ouragan began his showjumping career with Helen at the start of 2018 and competed in the 4yo final at Weston Lawns after winning the qualifier. They ended the year successfully moving up to Newcomers level.

Holly Johnson gained a treble win successfully picking up the Intermediate Horse & Leading Horse Owner trophies with an incredible 850 points for Lux Jazzy as well as collecting the Overall Adult Champion Trophy for 2018. Holly and her team of horses have competed consistently throughout 2018 with many wins at venues across the UK and culminating with Holly taking the top three places in the Northern Winter Bronze League.

The Progressive Horse Trophy went to Kerstin Deakin and Assandra. Kirsten also won the Open Horse and Young Rider Elite Trophy with the Grade A mare Sunsolde who Kirsten has successfully competed nationally and internationally for a number of years.

The 2018 Elite Rider Trophy went to Charlotte Ash and Ideal III. Charlotte has had a fantastic year competing nationally and internationally with her team of horses, qualifying and competing in the Ladies final at Wales & West show with Ideal III as well as being selected to represent GB in Austria - a terrific achievement.

I would like to thank everyone who supported the Ball this year, I hope to see you all out and about at shows soon and wish you all luck for 2019!
