5 Star Performance

Training the 5* way offers competitors the opportunity to focus on their training to improve performance in the ring and set correct foundation stones to progress up through the levels. With a series of progressive standards, the 5* Award Programme provides clear goals and competencies for all levels and abilities to strive for.
Whether you’re new to the sport and want to know more about how it ticks or an experienced amateur rider or full-time professional, each level of award requires you to set out your personal goals and achieve the ridden skills. This encourages good basic riding standards and knowledge of horse care, rules and equitation.
Signing up for the 5* way of training is straight forward and simple. The first step is to seek friendly advice from an accredited coach who will help you assess the level most appropriate to your current ability.
The awards are progressive so it’s important not to miss out on the foundations. This is why riders are asked to complete the written questions in all awards below the level they are taking. On enrolment you’ll be issued with your own personal log book. This outlines the standards you need to meet at each level and will help to identify your goals. Take your log book to each training session and your coach can sign-off the relevant criteria you achieve, monitor your progress and discuss the key areas for long term all-round development. Your log book will act as a record of your own personal journey and turn into a wonderful reference of the growing skills and confidence of you and your horse.
There is no time limit to work through an award but to achieve the relevant star level you need to have all the criteria signed off as a pass by a British Showjumping Accredited Coach/ UKCC Level 3 show jumping specific. They will need to see you demonstrate the criteria, question your understanding of the criteria and you should have completed answers to the questions for the star level you are taking.
You can contact an Accredited Coach/ UKCC Level 3 show jumping specific coach in your area for a friendly chat about signing up and training for the scheme. Also check with your Area Representitve as they ma\y include 5 star performance within their Area training.

‘The chance to ride at the Coaches Conference was a very good experience, I enjoyed the session, and was very pleased of the invite, the flat work advise given through Barnabus Mandahi was incredibly helpful when training at home, my young horses have gained a lot from it.’
‘The lower half of the award refreshed all of my knowledge from by BHS AI; it has made me a lot more aware of general horse welfare in every day life. Levels 4 and 5, made me think a lot about my techniques and how I use them.’
‘My opportunity to ride at the Coaches Conference was fantastic I really enjoyed it, and would jump at the chance to go again. I learnt new techniques from both trainers which I never knew before; they helped both my horse and I a great deal'
