James Wilson triumphs in the International Stairway at the Great Yorkshire Show

The Great Yorkshire Show held the seventh leg of the International Stairway Series 2019 on Wednesday and it was James Wilson from Frome in Somerset who made his trip up north a successful one by taking the top spot.

With only one clear in the first round of course designer Michael Bainbridge’s twelve fence track, the remaining four jump-off places were taken by the quickest of the faulters. Recently selected as part of Team NAF for the Longines FEI Jumping Nations CupTM of Great Britain CSIO5* at Hickstead, James Wilson piloted Susan Larson’s Imagine de Muze, an 11 year-old Belgian bred mare to a clear in the jump-off after having had a fence down in the first round. Their cumulative results in a time of 55.88 seconds saw them do enough to take the win.

Adrian Speight and Judith Whitham’s a 13 year-old British bred gelding, Millfield Baloney, replicated their second place from Royal Norfolk Show last week. Adrian was another to fault in the first round but a clear jump-off round in a time of 58.04 seconds saw them claim the runners up spot. John Whitaker MBE picked up third place with his wife Clare’s Unick Du Francport. They managed to leave all of the fences intact but picked up four time faults in the first round leaving them with four faults in a time of 62.75 seconds. Helen Tredwell picked up fourth with Larksong, they were only combination to go through to the jump-off with a clean sheet but two fences down proved costly. Harry Wainwright took fifth with Pinheiro Beech, they picked up one time fault in the first round and one time and two down in the jump-off.

The International Stairway takes place across a number of county shows where winning combinations accrue League Points that count towards the Final which takes place at the British Showjumping National Championships in August at Stoneleigh Park. The series culminates with a high profile championships where three Horse of the Year Show International Wild Cards are allocated as well as it being where the sports National Champion is crowned.
