Double success for Howley & Lockhead Anderson at Bolesworth

Day 3 of the 2022 Al Shira’aa Bolesworth Young Horse Championships witnessed plenty of close competition across all classes, in both International and Castle Arenas, at Bolesworth in Cheshire today.

Both Richard Howley, with Chinook, and Nicole Lockhead Anderson on Emerald Irish Cruise took back-to-back wins in their respective classes; Old LodgeStud 2* and Al Shira’aa 7yo Championship Qualifier.

Jay Halim was on good form with Winning Moon in the NexGen 2* 1.30m where 13 out of 50 participants were placed.

In the second of the Windmill Farm Estate 6 yo Championship Qualifiers, Nicole Pavitt with Colliers Carlotta took the win with Maisy Williams second and Laura Mantel third. Twenty were placed through to the final on Sunday out of 100.

The EVetDrug Ltd 2* 1.35 was another all-female top three with Sally Goding taking the honours ahead of Jessica and Georgina Ellis. Twelve were placed out of 44 competitors.

  • 3. Georgina Ellis, GBR, Fireball


Riding for Ireland, Richard Howley put in a stunning performance to make it two out of two in the Old LodgeStud 2* 1.40m GP qualifiers, putting him in a strong position for the grand finale on Sunday.

  • 2. Sally Goding, GBR, Spring Willow
  • 3. Harriet Biddick, GBR, Night of Glory O.L


The final class of the day, the Al Shira’aa 7yo Championship Qualifier, was a close fought affair with Nicole Lockhead Anderson taking the win. “Emerald loves to go fast. She’s been great in this ring and is an out and out winner.”

  • 2. Christopher Burton, Aus, Chedington Blue
  • 3. Laura Mantel, GBR, Laura Mantel


The excitement builds as the finals of the Ashdale Sports Horses 4yo and 5yo take place tomorrow. These sessions will provide an excellent big-event experience for the 4yo horses, with the top 5yo horse and riders qualifying through to Lanaken in September.

Finally, the Atlas Commodities Ride & Drive fun rider-to-driver relay race will take place on Saturday evening.

The 2022 Al Shira’aa Young Horse Championships returns to Bolesworth tomorrow, Saturday the 13th of August. The show includes the official British Showjumping Young Horse Championships with qualifiers for the World Breeding Championships at Lanaken in September.
