Dodson & Horrell National Amateur Second Rounds at Chard Equestrian Centre

The third of this weekend’s Dodson & Horrell National Amateur Second Rounds took place at Chard Equestrian Centre in Somerset. Competitors arrived at the show centre for the 85cm, 95cm, 1.05m and 1.10m second rounds with their hearts set on claiming one of the qualification tickets on offer for the Dodson & Horrell National Amateur Championships at Aintree Equestrian Centre in Liverpool on 12 – 17 November.

Just over half of the initial starters left the Tony Mills designed ten-fence-track intact to make their way to the jump-off. Six of those combinations went on to pull a double clear out of the bag and seven claimed tickets to the Championships.

Georgie Warden from Hook, Hampshire took the win with Charlotte Crocker’s Ugo Blue, an 11 year-old Irish bred chestnut gelding by Jaguar Mail. They posted a double clear in 34.27 seconds. Susan Le Moucheux was close behind in second place with her own Dungarven Flyer who also jumped a double clear in a time of 35.28 seconds just nipping ahead of Isobel Codd and Mayday XXI who finished just 0.02 of a second slower.

Seven combinations successfully steered their way around Tony Mills’ eleven fence track to keep the dream of making it to the National Amateur Championships alive. Despite a couple of combinations faulting in the jump-off, all seven earned their qualification tickets.

Ian Johnson from Cwmbran, Gwent sealed a one-two with his own Gorgeous George II and LSF Pleasure Cruise. Gorgeous George II, a 9 year-old Irish bred gelding by Obos Quality 004 took the win with a double clear in 43.61 seconds whilst LSF Pleasure Cruise, an 11 year-old mare also Irish bred posted a double clear just 0.21 of a second slower in 43.82 seconds.

Just short of half the initial starting field of thirty-one combinations managed to achieve a first round clear over Tony Mills’ eleven fence track. Thirteen completed with a double clear and only those who dared to let the handbrake off were awarded with a qualification spot.

Ella Matravers from Honiton, Devon narrowly clinched the top spot, posting a time of 35.34 seconds with Belinda Pennington’s 13 year-old Irish bred gelding Mighty Mac III. Their time was just 0.30 of a second faster than Southerly Roberts who produced a time of 35.64 seconds with her Winter Bronze League Champion Tinx to take the runners up position.

Twelve competitors successfully completed Course Designer Tony Mills’ first round track but the qualification tickets were distributed fairly to the eight who went on to gain a double clear.

Southerly Roberts from Hook, Hampshire went one better than on the previous day by taking the win in the 1.10m second round with Wurlitzer Fair, a 12 year-old British bred mare whom Southerly has competed since 2016. They posted an impressive time of 36.95 seconds, 1.6 seconds faster than her closest rival Hannah Tiley. Hannah piloted her own Amaryllis III into second place whilst also picking up 5th and 7th place with her other two rides.
