British Showjumping National Championships – Sunday report

On the final day the British Showjumping National Championships, Bucas Championship Arena 1 and UNIBED Championship Arena 2 were combined to become one large Championship arena; Mark Edwards and Royale Tale won the Senior Foxhunter Masters, the second championship win of the show for this pairing and Mark’s fourth from the week. Mark had nothing but praise for the 7-year-old horse: “she’s just so naturally quick, she has so much about her, you can just keep going and trust her.” When he was asked about the two arenas being made into one, Mark said, “I love a big arena, it makes it so enjoyable. It makes for better jumping.”

Following on in the Championship Arena, Christopher Smith took home the Prestige Italia Big Star National 6yo Championship title with One Gem. When asked about their round, the Cheshire-based competitor said: “to be fair, the mare couldn’t have jumped any better. She’s got all the jump in the world and from day 1 since I first rode her, she’s always been a winner. She can be quick without trying to be quick. When I walked the first round, I thought it was tough enough, and by the end of the round, it was mostly 1.40/1.45. For a 6yo, it’s a lot of jumping, but for the size of the jumps and the amount of jump she’s got; I’ve never sat on a horse with as much jump!”

Next over in Arena 3 the National Team Jumping Championships took place, with first place going to the Surrey Team, made up of Georgina Wood riding Greenlanes Hudson, Dominik Buchwald riding Camorasun, Georgia Darlington riding Lisa's Dream and Katie Mills riding Wishfull Italica. “We’ve only been competing as a team this year, with just the one qualifier but we are really pleased with how they all jumped” commented a spokesperson for Team Surrey.

With a clean sweep, Mark Edwards claimed the final title of the week at the British Showjumping National Championships. The Cardiff-based competitor has had an impressive week and topped it all of with Flying Tinker II to become the Walnut Hill National 1.30m Open Champion. Mark called this win 'the perfect end to the show'. He said: “it’s always known to be a fast class. Luckily, I was late in the draw, and I knew exactly what to do, and he jumped super again. Five championships is unbelievable really; a perfect weekend that’ll make the drive home a lot easier.”
