Cornwall’s brightest and best young showjumpers came together, whilst they were still able to,  to mark the success of another good season of competing at the many local shows across the county, at the Annual Junior Presentation and quiz night held at Truro Golf Club  in March.  Many young and talented showjumpers gathered to receive their awards for last year’s performance, in which hot competition dominated throughout the long season.

Claiming the Pony British Novice honours was the combination of Lucy James and Westerlake Fagus, followed by Neve Kemp and Wivollet Something Special in second, Hattie Grose and Pocket Rocket Murphy in third, and Jessica Luker and Roseways Fantasia in fourth.

It proved to be an evening to remember for Lucy, who also won the Pony Discovery section with Westerlake Fagus, and took third place with her other pony, Rio XV.  Jessica Luker and Coffestown Colour finished in second, while Tabitha Williams and Cranberry Twist were in fourth place.

A different victor emerged in the Pony Foxhunter as Izabella Walters and Camus Cream took first place, ahead of Lucy James on Rio XV, Izabella and Bishwell Flakes in third and William Ellery and Shalom Marlboro in fourth.

In the Pony Open, Arwen Scoffin took first and third place with Sligo Knowall and Foxgrove Helena Lou respectively, while brother Dominic took second place with Emerys.  Flora Tieken riding Coolatinn Sassy finished fourth.

Before the annual presentation, Academy members competed in a very different competition on the night, demonstrating the broad range of skills and knowledge covered by Academies.  The quiz began with all the members working in teams to identify famous riders and venues, as well as recognising equine veterinary injuries and conditions.  Studying graphic photographs, their task was to suggest causes, and recommend treatment, which led to a lot of serious discussion and thought among the teams.  Round three focussed on knowledge of the important BS Junior Code of Conduct, and in the final round, competitors were required to draw a horse and rider showing a perfect shape over a jump, demonstrating their understanding of Style and Performance.  As well as causing a lot of laughter, the round did uncover some amazing artistic talent among the young showjumpers!  The prize for the best drawing went to William Ellery.
