Team NAF finish 4th at Pony Europeans - Poland

The British Pony team competing at the Pony European Championships in Strzegom, Poland under the title sponsor banner of Team NAF narrowly missed out on a medal yesterday when they finished joint 4th with Ireland.

The Championships which commenced on the 11th August and ran until Sunday 15 August when the Individual medals were contested saw some particularly strong competition across the ten nations taking part and it was France that took the Team Gold whilst the Netherlands and Norway took Silver and Bronze respectively after a medal placing jump-off.

The five strong squad of riders, finished on 16 penalties overall after three rounds of jumping to match Irelands score and finish in joint 4th.  The opening day had seen all five riders come forward with only the three best scores counting.  Four riders then continued as declared team riders for the second and third round where a drop score was allowed across each whilst the fifth rider continues as an individual.

Lauren Caroline, aged 16 years from Horsham in West Sussex, with the 16 year-old brown gelding Kissemmie Chatterbox owned by Lee Caroline didn’t have the best of first rounds so carried on as an individual going forward. This dramatically improved from there on in, where faultless rounds were produced.

Poppy Deakin, aged 14 years from Dalton in Newcastle upon Tyne, with the 11 year-old liver chestnut mare Armene Du Costilg owned by Kerstin Deakin produce double clear on day two which saw her sitting in 5th place individually at the end of the Team Final.

Sophie Evans, aged 14 years from Burton-on-Trent in Staffordshire, with the 11 year-old bay stallion Oscar Van De Beekerheide owned by ESM Equestrian opened Day 1 with a penalty free performance which she matched on her first round of the teams.  Their second round unfortunately saw them eliminated in the final team round.

Elissa Herrmann, aged 15 years from Winchester in Hampshire, with the 11 year-old dun gelding Lapislazuli owned by Edwina Herrmann put in consistent performances throughout with just 4 penalties being accrued in each.  With three clears having been produced by the other team members in the first round of the teams they took the role of drop score in that particular one.

Henry Squibb, aged 14 years from Brentwood in Essex, with the 13 year-old dark brown stallion Kilcurry Dawn owned by Emily Fenn had two down in the opening day to be the drop score with Lauren.   A perfect clear on the opening round of the teams saw them just miss out from delivering another in the final round when they picked up an unlucky 4 penalties.

Individual Final
Poppy Deakin managed to hold on to her 5th place position that she started the Individual competition with.  A single time penalty in the first round and a clear in the second saw her finish just two places outside the medal positions.  It was France that claimed Gold and Silver, the Netherlands Bronze and Norway 4th.
