Friday 17 June 2022
Great Britain’s Team NAF were on top form today as they clinched the win in the Nations Cup competition at Gorla Minore in Italy. With three of the seven double clears and only one fence down between them, they finished on a zero score – the only team to do so. Great Britain were drawn second to go of the seven teams which came forward to jump the 1.45m twelve fence course designed by Andrea Colombo.
Oliver Fletcher, from Faringdon, Oxfordshire, was first out of the blocks for Great Britain with Lady Kirkham’s and Lady Harris’s 10-year-old bay gelding Hello William. They gave the team the best possible start with an immaculate clear round in both rounds.
Next up was Joe Whitaker, from Barnsley in South Yorkshire, who jumped a foot perfect clear in the first round with the 10-year-old chestnut gelding Hulahupe JR, owned by Jessica Crane. The second round saw them roll an unfortunate pole at the first element of the combination, just three from home.
Joseph Fernyhough, from Stonehouse in Gloucestershire, kept his cool under pressure in both rounds of his debut appearance on a senior team for Great Britain, after coming up through the youth teams, with the chestnut gelding Calcourt Particle, owned by Rowland Fernyhough. The combination made light work of the course, posting an impressive clear in both rounds to maintain Great Britain’s zero score.
Experienced team rider Amy Inglis, from West Sussex, took anchor position with the 14-year-old chestnut mare Wishes, owned by Claire Inglis. Although she was not required to jump the first round after her teammates all went clear, Amy and Wishes proved the class partnership they are by leaving all fences untouched in both rounds to achieve Great Britain’s third and final double clear which secured them the win.
Second place went to France who finished on a score of 8 faults and Switzerland finished in third place with a score of 8 faults, just 2 seconds behind France on time.
