Pony Proficiency

Cornwall AcademyThe Pony Proficiency Award was introduced to improve the all-round knowledge and horsemanship of junior members.

As with any sport, the earlier you instill good disciplines and basic principles the better foundations you have to build on. It’s much harder to correct bad habits than stop them from the outset.

The Pony Proficiency Award consists of riding, handling and interview sections, which assess basic riding and horsemanship.
More juniors are now taking the award in order to further their education and to make themselves more aware of the horse knowledge which the award provides. All candidates who pass the Pony Proficiency Award will receive a certificate and badge from the British Showjumping and every year the five top scoring riders in the country are presented with a £100 training scholarship.

The award, which is a pre-requisite for all pony riders up for international selection or Home Pony International 138cm and 148cm teams, can be taken with an Accredited Coach / UKCC Level 3 show jumping specific coach, who will teach and assess them against set guidelines.

“The Pony Proficiency was really worthwhile. It covered all the basics and gave me the confidence to look after and take sole charge of my pony which made the step up to horses easier"       Jess Engel
