Gloucestershire’s Abbie Whiting Wins the April NAF Shining Star Award
Thursday 09 May 2013

The NAF Shining Star Award for April 2013 has been given to 13 year-old Abigail (Abbie) Whiting from Gloucestershire. Abbie is a dedicated member of the British Showjumping Gloucestershire Junior Academy and it is Abbie’s enthusiasm and progress that has earned her April’s NAF Shining Star Award.
Nicky Florence, Lead Coach for the British Showjumping Gloucestershire Junior Academy, nominated Abbie for the NAF Shining Star Award and she gave the following reasons “Abbie has been a regular at the Gloucestershire Junior Academy since 2012 and she joined shortly after gaining the ride on two new ponies, It was soon noted that Abbie had a lot of natural talent and we have been able to build on that.
“In November 2012, Abbie was given the ride on R Hamlet, a JA pony owned by Lucie Hammond. Abbie and R Hamlet have enjoyed great success in the short time that they have been competing together and in February this year, the combination qualified for The Pony Restricted Rider Championship, which will be held at the Alexanders Horseboxes British Showjumping Scope Festival.
“Abbie is dedicated to working her ponies correctly and she is working her way through the NAF Pony Five Star Performance Awards. She has completed her 1* and 2* Awards and is working towards the 3*. Abbie really is worthy of the NAF Shining Star Award.”
Abbie has been a member with British Showjumping since 2010 and was delighted to learn that she had been awarded the NAF Shining Star “I got involved with the British Showjumping Gloucestershire Junior Academy because of the fantastic learning opportunities available to me. I would like to thank everyone who has been helping and supporting me, including my coach Nicky Florence, everyone at the Junior Academy, my mum and dad, and of course my ponies. I am looking forward to competing throughout 2013, whilst hopefully gaining more qualifications alongside continuing to progress through the NAF Pony Five Star Performance Awards.”
Tracey Lloyd, Marketing Manager for NAF commented “Abbie’s natural talent has clearly shone through and she shown great progress as a result of her structured training programme. We wish her sustained success with her NAF Pony Five Star Performance Awards, with the expectation of many more achievements to come! Congratulations Abbie, you are truly a deserving NAF Shining Star.”
The NAF Shining Star Award was introduced when NAF became a British Showjumping Business Partner. The award is for members of a Junior Academy who have shown a great deal of commitment, progression and outstanding behaviour along with their riding ability and much more. Riders are nominated by their lead coach, and then judged and awarded by NAF to one person each month.
