National Development Programme for Coaching Excellence

The National Development Programme for Coaching Excellence 2018/19, supported by Sport England funding, came to its conclusion on Thursday and Friday 5th April.

The final 2 days, which were held at Washbrook Farm, Aston le Walls, saw the coaches take to the arena in the wind and rain for two different sessions. The first focusing on the application of coaching skills with riders participatin in showjumping and dressage sessions overseen by Darrell Scaife, BE Master coach, FBHS and FEI Coach, and Dinah Stabb, a fellow of the Guildhall School of Music & Drama. The second session which was facilitated by Professor Tony Ghaye and BE accredited coach Marie Ryan, focussed on practically applying the psychological skills of coaching which the coaches had worked on theoretically in the previous 4 workshops.

Nicky Fuller, Coaching & Coach Development Consultant, facilitated a third session in the warmth of the pavilion on continuing professional development and coaching behaviours which involved coaches thinking about the different features of CPD other than the technical aspects and skills of horse and rider.

Day two got underway with an inspiring talk from Rachel Hooper- PG Dip, Level 4 Rowing Coach and Sport & Partnership Development Consultant.  The session was focussed on the coaching journey and really opening up about the key life events and experiences that have impacted coaching values and philosophy.

The day was rounded off with the coaches delivering presentations to the group on their personal NDPCE journey and how they have developed and grown over the seven month program.

Listening to the comments made by the coaches and how much they have taken from the programme was extremely inspiring and really demonstrated what a fantastic programme this is and what great coaches we have in the equestrian community. Below are just a handful of comments made throughout the presentations that demonstrates the impact the program has had on our 23 coaches:

The 23 coaches who completed the programme representing British Showjumping, British Dressage, British Eventing, Pony Club British Horse Society and Endurance GB are: Amanda Barton, Patsy Bartram, Melissa Beer, Amy Blount, Leonie Brown, Sue Colley, Linda DeMatteo, Angela Eastwood, Claire Edwards, James Emblen, Karen Farnsworth, Gemma Hallett, Liz Jackson, Alison Kenward, Gillian Liggins, Liz Madeley, Helen Martin, Julia Nelson, Erica Oldham, Caroline Peatfield, Liz Properjohn, Jon Rogers and Hannah Shea-Simonds.
