Jasmine’s Next Step up to Gold

Wiltshire’s Jasmine Punter has sent us an update on her step up experience

Hello everyone,

My latest 'Step up to Gold' National Training day took place at Houghton Hall Equestrian Centre on Tuesday 10th March. Although a four hour drive, Houghton Hall is a fantastic venue with lovely indoor stables, fantastic arenas and a good restaurant too!  We’ve been very lucky to train at some wonderful venues!

We started the day by meeting over breakfast in the restaurant for a briefing on the day’s agenda. We were lucky enough to have the Rider Physio, Horse Physio and Saddle expert from the World Class programme with us as well as Ben Townley; a course designer on the British Showjumping Young Professionals Programme.

Everyone then got their horses ready for a ‘trot-up’ practice. This gave Vicky (the horse physio from World Class) a chance to see our horses move but mainly for us to practice trotting up correctly for International competition.

Next was a ‘flatwork for jumping’ session which was led by Matt Lanni and conducted by our regional coaches. We were split into two sessions for the riding sessions so this gave everyone a chance to see the saddler and horse and rider physio’s. Vicky (horse physio) and Mark (saddler) worked together to assess any issues of the horses backs and checked the saddle fittings. Andy (human physio) analysed how we all ride and assessed us all. Andy could tell which side was my weaker side and therefore my ‘bad rein’ and gave me a resistance band and some exercises to strengthen me up, which are very useful!

We then all built a course with Ben Townley the course designer. It was insightful to be able to talk through a typical 1.30m track, both with our coaches and a course designer and be able to discuss why the course was built as it was and how each of our horses will need riding around certain aspects of the course. Everyone then took it in turns to warm up and jump round the course, before talking through each round with Matt and our regional coaches.

Once the horses were put away, we had a meeting in the restaurant to discuss forthcoming show plans for a hopefully, very exciting summer!

I will let you know how I get on!!

Best Wishes

Jasmine
