Laura Mantel made a winning return to Pyecombe with Glory B V, winning her first area trial in fine style to pick up the £1,000 winner’s purse.

“She was jumping out of her skin and made it feel easy, she loves the surface here,” said Laura on Liz Howe’s home-bred, ultra-consistent mare (Caretino Glory/Animo).

Fifteen of the 29 starters gained first round clears to make for a hot jump-off, run in reverse order of merit with the fastest in the first round taking the advantageous final draw. In the penultimate draw, Laura was chasing leader Phillip Miller on Brendon Stud’s home-bred Unbelievable Lady – a 10-year-old Unbelievable Darco daughter, Phillip was also drawn last on the speedy Sussex Caretino.

There was no time to lose! But Laura came out fighting and found all the short cuts on the 10-year-old mare to secure a win by almost two sec. Phillip chased hard on Brendon Stud’s Sussex Caretino – who shares her sire with Glory B V – but a rail down saw their hopes fade fast.

Laura Mantel made a winning return to Pyecombe with Glory B V, winning her first area trial in fine style to pick up a handsome £1,000 winner’s purse.

The pair had taken last month’s top-billed 1.50m at the Sussex venue a week after lifting the Welsh Master ladies title at the David Broome Event Centre.

In the penultimate draw, Laura was chasing leader Phillip Miller on Brendon Stud’s home-bred Unbelievable Lady – a 10-year-old Unbelievable Darco daughter born here – and the on-form Phillip was also drawn last on the speedy Sussex Caretino – another born at the Sussex venue.
