Newest Bonheiden Blog

Here is the next coaches blog about their experience to Bonheiden, Fred Bergendorf has told us about his experience going along as a coach.

"Hi Everyone

This weekend I was lucky enough to travel to Bonheiden Show with three other coaches - Mandy Frost, Phillipa McKeever Curry and Mandy McGlynn - as part of the International Experience Programme.

This was an opportunity to have an insight into how the top coaches work at an International Show - which would not have been the same if they had tried to convey the information at home.

Arriving at the show I was first struck by how close and convenient everything was on the show ground.  This meant that it was easy to feel at home quickly even if this was a riders first trip abroad.

Corrine Bracken and Matt Lanni were constantly on the go looking after everything and every detail that came their way.

I appreciated the chance to discuss the courses with Corrine and Matt and watch how they work with the riders in the warm up. Hearing how they communicate so clearly with only a few words in order to optimise the riders rounds in the ring.

As I watched the riders and their horses during the competition it was interesting to see how the flatwork and the riders balance paid off as the classes got bigger.

The courses that were 1.40m or above were more technical than I am used to seeing in the UK which meant that the cream of the riders rose to the top. It looked like our riders gained a great deal of experience from riding around these courses and rode all the better as the week progressed.  It was great to watch Steph Platts being placed in her first World Ranking Class.

I would strongly recommend the International Experience Programme to anybody who gets the chance to take part either as a rider or as a coach.   Attending a good show supported by top coaches has given me an insight and added enthusiasm to my own training."

Best wishes

Fred Bergendorff
