Laura Mantel claims the Connolly’s RED MILLS Senior Newcomers Second Round at Wales and West Showground

The second of this year’s Connolly’s RED MILLS Senior Newcomers Second Rounds took place at the ever popular Wales and West Showground on Sunday and it was on-form Laura Mantel who triumphed.

With only two qualifying tickets up for grabs for the Connolly’s RED MILLS Senior Newcomers Championship Final, which will be held during Horse of the Year Show in October, all starting combinations had their eyes firmly on crossing the finish line with a treble clear. But from a vast initial starting field of 115, only four combinations went on to produce a treble clear which meant that the allocation of the qualification places came down to the clock.

Reading based Laura piloted Francesca Whitehouse’s Whitesparke Pepper, an 8 year-old British-bred mare by Peppermill to the top spot after producing a foot-perfect clear in each round. Laura crossed the finish line in 39.36 seconds, just 0.31 seconds ahead of second placed Kathryn Ellison and Lucy Pinney’s Ge Palve, a 8 year-old Dutch-bred by Quick Star.

Joe Trunkfield claimed third place with Caroline Phillips’ Flipper Darco UK Z, fourth place and the final treble clear went to Harry Whall and his own Kings Borough Kasper whilst fifth place was awarded to Elizabeth Forrester and her own Halina who produced the quickest time in the jump off but faulted at the first part of the double.

The top two combinations secured their place in the Connolly’s RED MILLS Senior Newcomers Championship Final at Horse of the Year Show and the top five took home the chance to compete in the Connolly’s RED MILLS Senior Newcomers Masters at the British Showjumping National Championships.
