The Equitop Myoplast Senior Foxhunter Masters goes to Timothy Davies

The highly anticipated Equitop Myoplast Senior Foxhunter Masters 1.30m saw 12 competitors progress through to the thrilling jump-off on Day 5 at the British Showjumping National Championship 2018, held at NAEC Stoneleigh. With the top four in the class offering a qualification for Horse of the Year Show (HOYS), the pressure was on. It was Timothy Davies who shone through in the fierce competition aboard Lionel Van De Markieslanden, known as ‘Lionel’ who is owned by Barret Watson.

“I had my eyes set on the Horse of the Year Show qualifier. I didn’t want to go crazy but I knew once I had got the turn back completed – which as my horse can be quite sharp he can struggle with - then I could just let him run and jump. He is really careful,” explained Timothy.

Having been together for two years, the partnership continues to go from strength to strength. He continues: “I loved him straight away when I tried him in Belgium. I always knew he would come on and while it has taken a little time to get to this point, he just keeps getting better and better. I think he is a really great horse – it is all experience, learning and consistency.”

Competing in some Talent Seekers classes throughout the 2018 season, the two missed a couple of vital qualifying opportunities throughout the year.  At Arena UK Lionel and Timothy were narrowly pipped to the post. “I just thought it was going to be one of those years where we just weren’t going to be quite there, so to do this today is amazing. I didn’t expect to win today; I just really wanted to get into the top four.”

Completing the jump-off round in 40.58 seconds, the two made it home a whole second before second place Annabel Shields who was riding Creevagh Carisma.

For Timothy, winning and qualifying for HOYS alongside Lionel - in this esteemed class - carries great importance: “The Equitop Myoplast Senior Foxhunter for me is just one of the classes at HOYS that everybody wants to qualify for.  What he [Lionel] is going to do when he gets there I don’t know - but I think they need to go there when they are young in order to experience it.”

It is not only competitors who are guaranteed a fabulous day out, the British Showjumping National Championships also offers a great family day of exciting competition, hospitality and afternoon tea offerings and a retail shopping village. Entry for spectators wishing to take advantage of this fantastic show is free and parking is only £5 per car.
