Team Champion finishes joint third in the Lisbon Nations Cup

Friday saw Laura Renwick, Bruce Menzies, Matt Sampson and William Funnell all compete in the CISO4* Nations Cup out in Lisbon, Portugal.

First to jump for Great Britain was Laura Renwick from Essex. Laura partnered Lady Pauline Harris and Lady Pauline Kirkham’s Oz de Breve a horse Laura has produced from a youngster. Unfortunately Oz de Breve had two fences down totaling 8 faults.

Next to go wasBruce Menzies and Old Lodge’s British Bred Sultan V. The combination showed their class and jumped a foot perfect first round however they had unfortunate four faults in the second round, meaning they finished on a score of four.

It was Young Rider Matt Sampson and In Showjumpers Utopia XII who were next to take on the course. With both horse and rider making their debut at this level this was going to be a nail biting round. However they both showed their natural ability and calmness under pressure and jumped two foot perfect rounds to finish on a score of zero, which was Britain’s best score.

Last to go for Great Britain was Surrey based William Funnell and the British Bred Billy Angelo who is owned by Julie Slade. With Billy Angelo also making his debut at this level William knew he was going to have to use all of his experience to help this horse round. The combination had an unlucky four faults in the first round, but came out fighting for the second and jumped a foot perfect clear, finishing on a score of four.

Great Britain finished on a total score of eight faults leaving them in joint third position with France.

Bruce also went on to compete in the 40,000€ Grand Prix which took place on the Sunday. Bruce once again partnered Old Lodge’s Sultan V who showed his class yet again by jumping a double clear in a jump off time of 41.15 seconds leaving them in overall third position.
