Nottinghamshire Showjumper Michael Whitaker shares the win in the Zinc Management Five Fence Challenge
Monday 12 October 2015
Nottinghamshire’s Michael Whitaker on the 11 year-old chestnut gelding Quelbora Merze shared the win Zinc Management Five Fence Challenge that gripped the crowd on day three of Horse of the Year Show.
The multi-round competition, which sees fences rise in height with each round, end with a thrilling three-way tie between British Nations Cup star Michael, Buckinghamshire's Helen Tredwell riding Sebastian VII, a 9 year-old bay gelding owned by Colin Garratt and Ireland's Billy Twomey, who like Whitaker is based in Nottinghamshire, riding Diaghilev, a 12 year-old bay gelding owned Terry Payne.
Points are accrued for each of the five fences jumped, and after the fourth round, all three riders agreed to share the winner's purse, each collecting just over £2,260.
"I am over the moon with my horse," Finmere-based Tredwell said. "He has never jumped anything like that before.
"He got better and better over the four rounds, and they were really big fences out there."
Whitaker added: "I am very happy with the way my horse jumped. This competition is a very good one for young horses.
"At 1.65 metres to 1.70 metres, they were big jumps, and the three of us thought the horses had done enough and we were happy to share it."
And Twomey said: "This is a very good class, really entertaining for the crowd, and I am delighted to share it with two great riders."
