MICHAEL WHITAKER TAKES 2ND PLACE IN THE ESTORIL GLOBAL CHAMPIONS TOUR GRAND PRIX

The 5* International show in Estoril, Portugal saw Michael Whitaker with his own  10 year-old chestnut gelding Viking V take 2nd place in the 1.60m €285,000 Grand Prix over the weekend.
Michael was just one of four riders that produced a clear across the first two rounds plus a further clear over a timed third and final round, coming through the finish in a time of 45.65 seconds which was less than a second behind the winner. It was Germany’s Philipp Weishaupt and Leoville 2 who took the top place in 44.96 seconds with Germany’s Ludger Beerbaum and Chaman and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s Kamal Bahamdam and Noblesse des Tess taking 3rd and 4th place respectively.
The show also saw solid placings for Great Britain in some of the other classes. Notably Laura Renwick with Roller Coaster III, an 11 year-old bay gelding owned by her mother (Marian), who took 4th place in the 1.45m Speed class on the Friday. Laura also took 2nd place just above Michael and Viking V in the 1.50m Jump Off class on the same day with the 10 year-old chestnut gelding Oz de Breve owned by Lady Pauline Kirkham and Lady Pauline Harris.  Laura and Oz de Breve also went on to jump clear in the first round of the Grand Prix but an unfortunate 4 faults in the second round saw them relegated down the line to 10th place and the next highest placed British rider behind Michael’s 2nd placing.
Ben Maher also had a placing with his own 8 year-old chestnut gelding Aristo Z in the 1.45m two-phase class where they took 4th place, just ahead of Michael Whitaker who slotted into 6th place with the 11 year-old bay stallion Ingliston Twister who is owned by Alison Rodgerson.
Michael Whitaker is now sitting in 3rd place on 120 points on the Global Champions Tour league table after this, the 7th event in the series.  Ben Maher is sitting just behind him in 4th place on 115 points. The series now moves on to Chantilly France as it moves it’s way across Europe before the final in Abu Dhabi at the end of November.
