Awards and Achievements

Congratulations to Beth Vernon, who was awarded Junior Sportsperson of the Year at the Mansfield Sports Awards and the Nottinghamshire Sports Awards. The Junior Sportsperson titles were hotly contested. Beth’s mum Allyson said ‘there were some brilliant young sports people at the awards ceremony. We were thrilled and surprised that Beth won!’

2011 was a year of dream making for 15 year old Beth Vernon. Not only did she achieve team and individual gold at the Pony European Championships but she has also had numerous successes in three other international competitions (British Masters, CSIOP Hagen,  Zilveren, Belgium where she was placed 1st) and numerous winnings at national events such as Pony of the Year Show and The Blue Chip Championships.

Beth is an extremely talented rider who works hard balancing her school and riding commitments. Beth has been riding since the age of 3 when she was given a little pony called Royal and had lessons from a local rider and coach, Karen Peck.   At 9 years old Beth decided that Showjumping was her favourite discipline and started to train with British Showjumping coach Liane Smith.   We wish Beth much more success in 2012 and are pleased to hear that she has recently been accepted for Sports Aid! Congratulations to 13 year old Charlotte Bird from Nottingham who has been awarded the NAF Shining Star award for December. Nominated by Development Officer Ruth Tyler, Charlotte’s determination and hard work to Showjumping is second to none.

A member of the Leicestershire Junior Academy, Charlotte has attended every session with her Pony Woody and is now ready to progress from a Club member to a National member. Rescuing Woody from a sanctuary, Charlotte has worked very hard on his behaviour and her calm approach has paid off as he will now do anything for her.

Not only has Charlotte’s riding improved since joining the Academy but she also regularly writes a column for Equestrian Life Magazine promoting British Showjumping and the Leicestershire Academy.

“Tracey Lloyd of NAF (Natural Animal Feeds) commented, 'It is a joy to see Charlotte's clear involvement in all aspects of her sport; true grit and determination has gained her the NAF Shining Star Award. I have no doubt Charlotte has many more achievements to come.'

The NAF Shining Star Award was introduced when NAF became a British Showjumping Business Partner. The award is for members of a Junior Academy who have shown a great deal of commitment, progression and outstanding behaviour along with their riding ability and much more. Riders are nominated by their lead coach, and then judged and awarded by NAF to one person each month.
