Tuesday at the Alexanders Horseboxes Scope Festival (UK) Supreme Championships 2016

It’s that time of year again!  All roads led to Stafford and the Alexanders Horseboxes Scope Festival (UK) Supreme Championships 2016, and the championships got underway in earnest on Tuesday.

It was an after midnight finish but the Westcoast Express ladies jump-off was no less exciting as eighteen battled it out for victory.  Louise Saywell emerged the winner with new ride of two months, Graham Ward’s Feigtling.

“This was the biggest we’ve jumped and he was amazing,” said Louise, second two previous times – “I was leading both times on Winner until the last to go beat me – and Chloe came close!”

Chloe Winchester was 0.41 sec behind on Synique for second with Pippa Allen third on Hope Springs and Emma stoker fourth aboard Bob Young’s Townhead Tallulah V.

Young riders showed the way in the senior classes.

Lucy Hahn aged 15 years-old,  outpaced her rivals in the 10-horse jump-off to take the Smarter Training 1.15m championship on Bombastic II, a 10-year-old she inherited from her sister Emma.

“It’s all thanks to Kerry Grimster, her advice and patience,” said Buckinghamshire-based Lucy.

Charlotte Geddes provided the only other clear for second on Paradise G with Rachel Vicary in third on Sparkling Indulgence.

15 years-old Katie Benbow lifted the Panda Bamboo Flooring 95cm title with tight turns and a flourishing gallop through the finish on Simon Benbow’s Ruby St Loise.

“The course suited, she’s good at turning and that’s down to Dan Patrick, he started her off and taught her how to turn,” said Katie, who rode this 10-year-old for Anne Fearnall for 12 months before her father Simon bought her.

Ellie Burrell-Squibb aged 10 years-old,  drew the biggest cheer when topping a very hot, competitive Cats and Pipes Debut 128cm 19-strong jump-off on Mini Mouse II.

“She’s quiet at home but lights up at a show and she’s fast,” said Ellie, who has no doubt who is the best trainer – “My Granddad! [Les Squibb].”

12 year-old Lily Smith posted her biggest win in the Cats and Pipes Debut 138cm with her 8-year-old Holly VI in a 15-pony decider.

“She’s easy, careful and genuine,” said Maidstone, Kent-based Lily, who trains with Jim Howard.

Iwan Carpenter aged 12 years-old claimed the Pony of the Year Show 5 and 6-year-old Elite Championship – a new class at Scope this year and the brainchild of Katrina Moore – with the six-year-old Follow Jazzy Lady.

Three reached the final and third round, with last-drawn Iwan taking the spoils on the Hemmingway daughter, bred by Rhona Anderson out of her former 14.2hh ride Jazzy Lady.

“She’s easy, quite sharp and wants to jump, but she also likes to buck,” said Iwan, who kept the mare on an even and flowing pace to win.

Claudia Moore took second with Glamour IV in the three-pony jump-off, with Georgia Taylor-Jones third on Horseabout Zibu.

Harry Wood clinched the POYS 7-year-old Elite Championship with the sole round one clear on Going Platinum, although he thought he’d had four faults.

“The middle plank on fence nine fell, I thought that’s it,” said Harry, delighted to find he was given a clear round as it was a lower rail and the height of the fence was not affected.

The mare Going Platinum joined Harry 12 months ago.

“She’s so laid back, she’s almost horizontal,” he said.

16 years-old John Ellis claimed the POYS Debut 148cm on the 19-year-old mare Willows Delight.

“She jumped in the HOYS Foxhunter with Christie Pritchard but has spent the last four years in the field until Ken Pritchard told me he had a pony in the field that would suit me, and we clicked straightaway,” said John.

Sandy McLean headed the Graham Heath Construction under 16 title on Warhol Wulfselection Z.

“He’s powerful and forward-going but he listens, and he’s actually my sister Claire’s horse, but I’ve ridden him for two years,” said Sandy.
