Speedi-Beet HOYS Grade C Qualifier at the Oxfordshire Area Show

The Speedi-Beet HOYS Grade C qualifying competitions continued last week (Friday 24th August 2012) at the Oxfordshire Area Show held at Addington Manor in Buckinghamshire. The class attracted 54 eligible starting combinations, all hoping to claim their direct qualification into the Championship Final.

The Speedi-Beet HOYS Grade C qualifier saw riders gather from all over the country with the aim of qualifying for the Speedi-Beet HOYS Grade C Championship, which will be held at the Horse of the Year Show (HOYS) on Sunday 7th October 2012.

From the total number of starters, an impressive total of 26 combinations went clear in the first round to make it through to the jump off. With only three direct qualifying places available, all of the remaining combinations were hoping to produce a double clear in a fast time to put them in contention for Championship Final qualification. From the 26 combinations that went through to the jump off, seven managed to produce the all important double clear, meaning that the allocation of the three direct qualifying places went down to the times.

The overall winner of the qualifier was 43-year-old Jo Pay from Fobbing, Essex. Jo won the class on board her own seven-year-old dark bay gelding, Domino VI. Jo and Domino VI were the seventeenth combination to go in the jump off and they achieved their double clear in a time of 38.23 seconds to secure the win and their place in the Speedi-Beet HOYS Grade C Championship Final.

Second place went to 22-year-old Harriet Nutall from Yeovil, Somerset. Mark rode seven-year-old grey gelding, Silver Lift, owned by Rupert Nuttall and the combination produced their double clear in a time of 39.36 seconds to secure their place in the Speedi-Beet HOYS Grade C Championship Final.

The combination in third place took the last direct qualifying place and this spot was filled by 37-year-old Shane Breen from Haywards Heath, West Sussex. Shane rode his own seven-year-old chestnut stallion, Golden Hawk. The combination produced their immaculate second clear in a time of 39.97 seconds to book their place in the Championship Final.
