The sixth of the Speedi-Beet HOYS Grade C qualifying competitions took place last week (Tuesday 24th July 2012) at the New Forest & Hampshire County Show in Brockenhurst, Hampshire. The class attracted 46 eligible starting combinations, all hoping to claim their direct qualification into the Championship Final.
The Speedi-Beet HOYS Grade C qualifier saw riders gather from all over the country with the aim of qualifying for the Speedi-Beet HOYS Grade C Championship, which will be held at the Horse of the Year Show (HOYS) on Sunday 7th October 2012.
From the total number of starters, four combinations went clear in the first round to make it through to the final jump off. With only three direct qualifying places available, all of the remaining combinations were hoping to produce a double clear to put them in contention for Championship Final qualification. From the four combinations that went through to the jump off, two managed to produce the all important double clear, whilst the other two combinations both had two poles down. This meant that the allocation of the three direct qualifying places went down to the times.
The overall winner of the qualifier was 49-year-old Tracy Priest from Cranleigh. Tracy won the class on board her own seven-year-old chestnut mare, Doma Sue. Tracy and Doma Sue led the jump off from the start and they achieved their double clear in a time of 42.42 seconds to secure the win and their place in the Speedi-Beet HOYS Grade C Championship Final.
Second place went to Mark Armstrong from Bordon, Hampshire. Mark rode seven-year-old bay mare, Petrushka III, owned by Emma Armstrong and the combination produced their double clear in a time of 42.51 seconds to secure their place in the Speedi-Beet HOYS Grade C Championship Final.
The combination in third place took the last direct qualifying place and this spot was filled by 44-year-old Belinda Bick from Lyndhurst, Hampshire. Belinda rode her own 12-year-old bay gelding, Umpa Lumpa. The combination had the first and the fourth fences down, but their time of 37.75 seconds ensured their place in the Championship Final.
