Speedi-Beet HOYS Grade C Qualifier at the Bicester & Finmere Show

The penultimate Speedi-Beet HOYS Grade C Qualifier took place at the Bicester & Finmere Show in Oxfordshire on Saturday 9th August 2014. As ever with this well contested series, the qualifier proved to be popular and a total of sixty starting combinations came forward.

Up for grabs at this qualifier were three direct qualifying tickets for the Speedi-Beet HOYS Grade C Championship Final at the Horse of the Year Show and each starter was vying for one of these. All combinations were hoping to produce a double clear in order to put them into strong position overall.

Eight combinations went through into the jump off after producing a first round clear and the jump off saw four combinations achieve a crucial double clear. With just three qualifying places on offer, the clock proved to be pivotal in deciding the order of the places.

The fastest double clear of the class was produced by 35 year-old Emma Jo Slater from High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire on Lizziemary, an 8 year-old chestnut mare owned by Kim Barzilay. Fourth to go in the jump off, Emma Jo and Lizziemary had it all to play for, having seen just one double clear produced before them. Knowing that a quick double clear would them into contention, the combination produced a quick and careful jump off round to secure their double clear in just 39.82 seconds.

Will Funnell, from Dorking in Surrey, took second place on board Billy Stud’s 7 year-old chestnut stallion Billy Um Bongo. They were drawn fifth in the jump off and they also posted a fast double clear to cross the finish line in 40.12 seconds.

Third went to 23 year-old Zoe Adams from Halstead, Essex and she partnered Emilie Machon’s 8 year-old chestnut mare Billy Butter. This combination delivered their double clear in 42.05 seconds.
