SEIB Winter Novice Championship Qualifier at the Scottish National Equestrian Centre

The fifth qualifier of the SEIB Winter Novice Championship 2015 proved to be popular as spectators saw fifty-one combinations come forward for the class which took place yesterday at the Scottish National Equestrian Centre in Ecclesmachan, West Lothian.

With just two qualifying places up for grabs for the Championship at the Longines Royal International Horse Show (28th July – 2nd August 2015), each competitor started out with the aim of securing a double clear in a fast time as they knew that would put them in with a chance of claiming a desired qualification place.

Eighteen of the fifty-one starters delivered a first round clear for a place in the jump off and six combinations then went on to secure a double clear. With just two qualifying places on offer, it meant that the allocation of these was to come down to the ever crucial clock.

James Smith, aged 22, from Kirkcudbright, Kirkcudbrightshire produced the fastest double clear on Parkhill Legacy, a 10 year-old bay gelding owned by Stephen Lohoar. Drawn as the eighth combination to go in the jump off, James and Parkhill Legacy produced the second double clear of the class after crossing the finish line in 42.18 seconds. This time was to prove quick enough for the top spot, which they then retained for the remainder of the competition.

Second place was taken by 33 year-old Moira Williams from Shotts, Lanarkshire on her own 8 year-old bay gelding Captains Cloualier Artist. This combination secured their double clear in 43.83 seconds to give them their place in the Championship Final.
