Rule Changes for 2017 Summer Season

We are now fast approaching the start of the Summer season which brings with it the start of the new league periods. With this is mind, now is a great time to be planning your competition calendar and familiarising yourselves with the rule changes that will be coming into effect as of the 1st April 2017 -

Rule 67 - British Showjumping League Overview: Bronze Leagues (date of implementation - 01.04.17): Updated wording as follows due to the implementation of new restrictions; “Rider Eligibility The following riders are exempt from the Bronze League: • (As of 01.04.2017) No rider will be eligible for the Bronze League Final if they have another horse in the Silver League during the respective league period. Furthermore, riders who accumulate points in the Silver League will be ineligible to participate in the Bronze League Direct Qualifiers/ Semi Finals or Championship for one year (Summer and Winter League period).”

Rule 102.4 - Saddlery & Equipment (date of implementation - 01.04.17):

Market Harborough reins are no longer permitted, wording amended as follows;

“4 A gag snaffle may be used. A Market Harborough rein (As of 01.04.17) and all other running or check reins and reins acting through sheaves or pulleys are prohibited in the competition arena.”

Rule 102.4 - Saddlery & Equipment (date of implementation - 01.04.17):

The use of tongue straps are forbidden, wording amended as follows;

“5 The use of tongue straps are forbidden (As of 01.04.17). The use of string, fine wire, twine or cord in or around a horse’s or pony’s mouth is also forbidden. Properly constructed tongue guards, which are detached from the reins and bit, are permitted.”

Rule 102.8 - Saddlery & Equipment Wording amended as follows;

Rule 102.8 - Saddlery & Equipment: Pony Tack Rules: Insert amendments as follows (date of implementation - 01.04.17);

“Pony Tack Rules

The following additional restrictions apply to pony competitors only:

(a) Correctly fitted standing and running martingales only to be used (can be used together). Any type of running reins, Market Harborough reins, hackamores (see * below), bitless bridles and combination bits are not permitted in the arena, practice area or anywhere in the immediate vicinity of the showground. * (As of 01.04.2017) Hackamores to be permitted for 148cms Pony Gold League classes only. No other bit is per mitted to be used with the hackamore.

(b) (As of 01.04.2017) Pelham’s with a shank exceeding 6cms, measured at maximum extension from bottom of mouth piece to bottom of the bit, may not be ridden with one rein when using the ring below the mouthpiece and must be ridden with roundings’s, split reins or two reins. Pelham’s with shank not exceeding maximum 6cms may be ridden with one rein. The total length of the Pelham may not exceed 15cms.

(c) (As of 01.04.2017) Nosebands must be constructed of leather and should be fitted flat against the head of the pony. Only one noseband may be worn. Rope, elastic or chained nosebands are not permitted.

(d) (As of 01.04.2017) Standing martingales must be attached to a flat leather surface cavesson nose band that is at least 2cms wide.
