PONY OF THE YEAR SHOW 2019

The Pony of the Year Show celebrated it’s second year at Onley Grounds in Warwickshire with Easter eggs, prizes, camaraderie and five action-packed, fun-filled days.

Claudia Moore reigned supreme, taking the top two places in the top-billed Harcour JA grand prix with the only two clear rounds to pocket a handsome £2,500.

Nineteen tackled the thirteen-fence track but only Claudia found the key – and she did it with both ponies owned by her mother Katrina Moore.  Shamrock Du Gite was the first to prove foot-perfect and Claudia followed it up with a super penalty-free round on her European 2018 individual bronze medallist Elando Van De Roshoeve.  She opted to take the win on the 15-year-old Elando.

“Both ponies felt fabulous all week and Shamrock was on point for the Grand Prix after winning the qualifier in the outside ring.  Elando just loves the pressure and comes up trumps every time; he never feels like he is going to knock one down and fills me with confidence,” said Claudia, who thought the track was “big and technical but fair”.

“There were lots of subtle questions all around the course, you needed scope to jump the combination and the final line to a tall plank needed care after the decent oxer out of a turn,” she added.

A late falling pole at the first element of the double of water tray verticals prevented Elloise Smit from forcing Claudia into a jump-off and she finished third with Deborah Smit’s 17-year-old Newtown Samson.  However, the consistent pair claimed a top three placing every day, including winning the qualifier on day one, to earn the leading JA rider award.

Jodie Burchmore-Eames scored an attractive double of grand prix wins with Jack Eames’ consistent Mighty Mouse W Van De Dauwhoeve, winning the JC and 7-year-old titles.

Seven contended the JC jump-off with Jodie forging ahead to win by 3.78 seconds.  And the pair convincingly topped the 7-year-old with the only clear round in the three-pony class.

Charlie Atkinson landed the Talentspotters 148cm Grand Prix in an exciting, nine-pony decider with Sarah Kane’s Seamus II.  Competition was hot but Charlie remained cool to guide the 18-year-old Seamus into the top spot to win by 1.09 seconds over Henry Squibb in second on Emily Fenn’s Kilcurry Dawn.

Red Morgan secured victory in the five and six-year-old with the sole clear round in the seven-pony jump-off on Sue Evans’ French-bred 6-year-old Demon Du Bary.

Noora von Bulow dominated the 128cm Grand Prix, lifting the top two places in a four-strong jump-off on two of her seasoned campaigners owned by her mother Sharifa Al-Homaizi.  Accuracy was the key here as the clock lured riders into making mistakes, but cool-headed Noora produced the only two jump-off clears to take victory on the 18-year-old Peppino Il Grande and steered the 21-year-old Sparkel III into second.

Four riders contended the Cats & Pipes 138cm Grand Prix and again accuracy came to the fore as Lauren Caroline registered her first big win with Lee Caroline’s The Jacaloupe.  Victory came with the only treble clear, Lauren and the 19-year-old gelding showing every fence a clean pair of heels.

Nicole Lockhead Anderson was crowned the Under 18’s champion with Holly Smith’s I’m Special De Muze 7-year-old Manolito P.  Just three riders contended the jump-off with Nicole racing away to take victory by 1.11 seconds from Alice Weightman in second on Cindy VI.

Alice went one better on Clare Weightman’s 12-year-old Cindy in the children-on-horses championship and clinched the title from the 1.30m section with the only double clear in a three-way decider.

Fresh from her Springboard 138cm final success at the British Showjumping Winter Championships at South View, Lila Davies and Sharon Mitchell’s 14-year-old Dun N Dust It claimed the Andrews Bowen 11-year-old and Under Grand Prix in fine style.  Sixteen contended the jump-off with Lila flying into the top spot with 1.71 seconds to spare.

Elysia Heagren Bond was another to continue with her successful run and just one week after claiming the Voltaire Design Sapphire title at the Blue Chip Championships with Kerry Grimster’s eight-year-old Attyrory Golden Lady, she claimed the Novice Grand Prix.

Twelve of the thirty-one entries posted first round clears over the eleven-fence course to access the jump-off but the on-form 14-year-old Elysia had all the turns sewn up to take victory.  Maisy Williams looks to be following in her International showjumper father Guy’s footsteps and she finished second on Korado II 1.10 second in arrears.

Eloise Burden outpaced all to take the Introductory Grand Prix with Richard Burden’s Happy Hero.  An eleven-fence track reduced the thirty-one starters to fourteen for the jump-off with Eloise executing tight lines on the five-year-old dun mare to win by and impressive 2.11 seconds.

Kristina Yeoman showed the way in the Mini Grand Prix with Daniel Yeoman’s Legend Reborn.  Thirty-six contended this class and with twenty-five through to the jump-off, it was all about the clock.   Kristina found the shortest route with the 20-year-old 138cm mare Legend Reborn to win with 0.28 seconds to spare.

Liala Ramaci and Lambay Off Broadway settled for second here but went one better in the Inbetweeners Grand Prix.  It was a hot class with twenty-three of the thirty-six starters coming forward to the jump-off but Liala held off all challenges on the Irish-bred 8-year-old mare Off Broadway to take victory by 0.91 seconds.

Mimi Price found the key to the 80cm 10-fence track to take the Preliminary Grand Prix title with Danielle Featherston-Price’s Holiday Girl Friend.  Ten from an original twenty-nine starters contended the jump-off with Mimi and the 11-year-old mare she has ridden for just five months taking the win with 0.35 seconds in hand.
