OLYMPIC GOLD MEDALLIST PETER CHARLES TO COMPETE AT HORSE OF THE YEAR SHOW 2012
Monday 03 September 2012
Team GB Olympic show jumper, Peter Charles, will compete at Horse of the Year Show, “The World’s Most Famous Horse Show”, held at Birmingham’s NEC from 3rd – 7th October 2012.
Peter was invited to compete in the international classes at Horse of the Year Show as one of the 12 riders drawn from British Showjumping’s Top Rider rankings (as of 31st July 2012). A total of 10 international classes will commence on Thursday 4th October, four of which carry World Ranking Points.
No stranger to the show, Peter was named Leading Gentleman Rider at Horse of the Year Show in 2010 and won the Philip Billington Memorial Cup in 2009 with Murka’s Nevada.
Returning to the saddle following a serious fall in 2006, Peter has enjoyed a successful career to date. In total, he has ridden in three Olympic Games, three World Championships and two European Championships. This year, it was his clear round in the jump-off at Greenwich, riding the 10-year-old Murka’s Vindicat, which secured Great Britain’s first show jumping team gold medal for 60 years.
Peter’s son, Harry, 13, was the youngest show jumping champion at Horse of the Year Show last year, riding Murka’s Headmore Little Lightning to victory in the HOYS 128cm Championship. This year Harry will be riding Murka’s SL Safo in the Blue Chip Feed Balancer Pony Newcomer and Squibb Demolition Pony Foxhunter, while, in the Leading Pony Show Jumper of the Year, he will ride Murka’s Future and Murka’s Money Maker.
Harry’s younger sister, Scarlett, 11, will also be competing. She will ride Murka’s Mathew’s Girl and Murka’s Flinor Songbird in the HorseRadar.co.uk 128cm Championship; the same ponies on which Harry was placed third and fifth at Horse of the Year Show in 2011, respectively.
Helena Pettit from Grandstand Media Ltd, organiser of Horse of the Year Show, commented: “We’re thrilled to have our second Olympic gold medallist set to compete here at HOYS in October. 2012 has been an outstanding year for British show jumping and we’re very excited to have some of our Olympic riders en route to join in the celebrations at the show. It will also be a fantastic opportunity for many visitors to see them back in action, particularly if they were unable to secure tickets to Greenwich.”
The 2012 Horse of the Year Show will host the finals of the most highly regarded national showing and show jumping championships, alongside international show jumping and an exciting line-up of equestrian entertainment, including the exclusive display The Final Charge by Atkinson Action Horses, the Equimax Pony Club Mounted Games for the Prince Philip Cup, Osborne Refrigerators Scurry Racing, a Dressage Demo with Richard Davison and a Show Jumping lecture demonstration with Tim Stockdale. The popular Think Like a Pony Interactive Feature Area will make a welcome return, and of course the famous HOYS Retail Village featuring hundreds of trade stands. An extra special finale on Sunday night will include iconic actor Brian Blessed reading the famous Ode to the Horse, “Britain’s Got Talent” sensations Only Boys Aloud performing some spine-tingling pieces and appearances from some special champions including our 2012 Olympic medallists and Grand National winner Neptune Collonges.
