Lottie Tutt & Colours of Romeo Win Blue Chip Pony Newcomers Second Round at Sparsholt College
Friday 29 May 2015
The Blue Chip Pony Newcomers Second Rounds continued on Saturday 23rd May at Sparsholt College in Hampshire and once again, the class proved to be a popular part of the venue’s Pony Premier Show.
Seventy-four combinations contested this second round and all eyes were on the two direct qualifying places available for the Blue Chip Pony Newcomers Championship Final at Horse of the Year Show. Each rider came into the class aiming to produce a treble clear as they knew that this would give them the best opportunity to secure a qualification spot and four went on to achieve this.
The final jump off saw eighteen combinations start out over the eight fence track and the fastest treble clears of the class came early on, leaving the competitors with a nervous wait in terms of whether they could hold on to their qualification places.
Lottie Tutt, aged 14, from Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire was the quickest across the course with Penny Grimster’s 8 year-old appaloosa mare Colours of Romeo. Having been drawn third to go, Lottie needed to not only secure a treble clear, but also set a fast time in order to give her a good advantage of the rest of the field. Lottie and Colours of Romeo’s round proved to be good enough to see them return home across the finish line with that third clear in 36.86 seconds, a result that no other competitor would match.
Second place went to 15 year-old Tabitha Dean from Hook, Hampshire on Sam Dean’s 8 year-old grey mare Atlantic Hope II. Tabitha and her ride were drawn as the first to go across the jump off track and they set a good pace after producing their treble clear in 38.63 seconds. Although they couldn’t hold on to that top spot, their result did give them one of those sought after Championship Final places.
With the top two taking the direct qualifying tickets for the Blue Chip Pony Newcomers Championship Final at the Horse of the Year Show, the riders and ponies that finished in third to fifth missed out on Championship qualification this time around. However, they did take home the chance to compete in the Blue Chip Pony Newcomers Masters at the British Showjumping National Championships.
