LAURA MANTEL CLAIMS 2019 WELSH MASTERS TITLE

Laura Mantel scored a double of victories at an action-packed Welsh Masters four-day festival at the David Broome Event Centre, Chepstow, including the feature Equestrian Surfaces Grand Prix with Glory B V.

Course-designer Raf Suarez’s 12-fence track reduced the sixty-three starters to twenty for the jump-off and although a problematic skinny stile claimed several victims, later riders chased the clock for a thrilling second round.

But none of them took risks like Laura as she set off at the gallop and maintained the pace on Liz Howes’ home-bred Caretino Glory x Andiamo Z 12-year-old Glory B and she skewered the top spot with a tight inside turn to the penultimate oxer and took two strides out to the final vertical.  They landed the title with more than two sec to spare.

“We know each other so well now and sometimes she’s a step ahead of me, she’s always looking for the next fence and seems to think ‘turn’ before I do,” said Laura.

A late round by Adrian Speight claimed second with Judith Whitham’s Millfield Baloney and young rider Allana Clutterbuck secured third on Vykinbay.

A flying round by Laura with Sally Jobson-Scott’s 7-year-old Muna VD Bisschop outpaced all 16 rivals in the 7 and 8-year-old final to claim victory by an impressive 3.71 seconds.

“She is unreal, the more I kick the higher she goes, she wants to win as much as I do,” said Laura on the mare with Cornet Obolensky x Nabab De Reve bloodlines.

Georgia Tame’s flying round on Z7 Canya Dance secured the Shane Walsh Equestrian ladies title by almost two sec in a competitive jump-off of twenty-two.

“She’s a chestnut mare and likes to go her own way, I work with her,” said Georgia on the 8-year-old by Shane Breen’s top ride Can Ya Makan.

Mark Edwards secured the Shane Walsh Equestrian Gents Championship with the tightest of lines in a 12-horse jump-off aboard his home-bred Montreuxs Tale to win by 1.74 seconds.

“He’s big at 17.2hh but he has lots of scope and enjoys the job,” said Mark on the 9-year-old sired by his top ride Tinkers Tale.

Matthew Sampson executed every shortcut option to outpace all eighteen rivals and take the Hazelden Saddlery 6-year-old championship by 1.42 seconds with Sean Conway’s Ivory, a new ride of two weeks.

“She’s lovely and ticks all the boxes, sharp and switched on but uncomplicated,” said Matthew, who finished second in the 6-year-old grand prix in Opglabbeek, Belgium, at their first show.

Luke Hill’s late draw secured the Welsh Masters five-year-old title with Billy Bakewell, a Billy Um Bongo x Jazz mare who only started jumping in February.  This was their seventh show and they headed the 19-strong jump-off with more than two sec in hand.

“She’s so straight-forward and easy to deal with, she’s worked out what to do already,” said Luke.

All the risks paid off and Kathryn Ellison raced to victory in the Showground Photography 1.25m championship with Jabeena Maslin’s 13-year-old Hanleen Sultis to win the nine-strong jump-off by 0.65 seconds.

“She loves her job and I can trust her to gallop, she always stays careful,” said Kathryn, who broke this mare in 10 years ago and introduced her to her first showjumping class.

Chloe Reynolds claimed the NAF 1.20m championship with new ride of three months Quantify, an 11-year-old owned by Jancey Wembridge.

“She was a broodmare and only started jumping in October but has come on quickly – she was still in discovery in January but now she’s out of newcomers,” said Jancey.

“She’s so laidback and level-headed, just goes in and does her job,” added Chloe.

Fresh from their Blue Chip Star Championship success, Katie Shaw and her sister Emma Sargeant’s home-bred It’s the Business 18-year-old maxed on their final draw to take the Baileys Farm Equestrian 1.15m title.

“I wish he was 10 years younger, although he’s got more excited over the four days he’s like a horse half his age,” said Katie, who won by 0.37 seconds.

Brooke Hunter held off the challenges of twenty-nine rivals to land the Deebees Rosettes 1.05m Championship with Little Cruise.

“He’s funny, cheeky character, a real attention-seeker who will even nod ‘Yes’ when asked if he wants a polo,” said Brooke, on the consistent 12-year-old she bought five years ago.

Ella Dickinson triumphed in the Keith Price Garages 1.10m Championship with the 12-year-old Berries Farm Zac, a ride of two years.
