Jack Whitaker & Team Europe lead after first day at Youth Olympic Games

 

The first day of the Team jumping at the Buenos Aires 2018 Youth Olympic Games got officially underway earlier today in Argentina.

With thirty riders from thirty nations making up the delegation of showjumping athletes it was Team Europe who held joint 1st position on the leaderboard after the first round of the Team competition that runs in a similar format to that of the traditional Nations Cups.  The difference being that each team has five members, with two becoming the drop score in each round, and all the horses are ‘borrowed’ for the event and allocated via a draw.

Sharing pole position with Australasia and North America on a zero penalty score the three nations go in to tomorrow’s competition hoping to claim one of the three medal winning positions on offer.  Jack Whitaker, aged 16 years from Whatton in Nottinghamshire, is one of the five riders representing Team Europe.  Riding LV Chance Luck, a horse which he was drawn with earlier in the week, he is joined by Giacomo Casadei (ITA), Vince Jarmy (HUN), Rowan van de Mheen (NED) and Simon Jan Morssinkhof (BEL).

The second round of the competition takes place tomorrow, 9th October 2018, when the medals will be decided and awarded commencing at 2pm local time.
