Guy Williams Takes 2014 National Championship Title at the Alexander Horseboxes Scope Festival Final Day

The final day of the week-long festival had thrills and spills, tears of joy and jumping that had spectators screaming encouragement.  The best was saved until last, with Guy Williams and Depardieu Vant Kiezelhof taking the Alexanders Horseboxes grand prix title in a breath-taking, had you on the edge-of-your-seats, gripping jump-off.

The final fence, on a long approach towards the entrance, took its toll, claiming eight in the 14-strong jump-off to much groaning from disappointed spectators.  It caught Guy first time round on Basic, but on Lindsay Doran’s Depardieu there was no mistake, and the super-speedy Guy could not be caught. “The last fence was like a Joker in an accumulator – you had to jump it,” he said.

Matthew Sampson with Costalot was second ahead of Julie Andrews and Wilando B.

Two super six-year-olds netted the top two places in the British Showjumping Partnership National Six-year-old championship, both ably guided by Jamie Wingrove. Cassianne, a six-year-old by Cassiro and owned jointly by Peter O’Brien and Fiona Wingrove, took the top spot in a four-way decider.  “She’s naturally quick with plenty of jump,” said Jamie, also second on Neil Moffitt’s Double Quick, bought six months ago from Roelof Bril.

Third in the Senior Riders Championship to Derek Morton, Vere Phillipps claimed his own title in the HorseSolarium.co.uk Grade B Championship with Skerne Scipio – a seven-year-old Derek produced. “Derek has done a great job with him and was always beating me last year, and when he came up for sale I bought him,” said Vere, who won the Polly Phillipps Memorial Trophy, dedicated to his late wife, at Rutland County earlier this year on Scipio. “I’ve taken time to jump a lot of clear rounds with him and getting his confidence, I’ll aim him at area trials next year.”

Danielle Ryder claimed the Buckaroo Equine 1.05m Adventurer championship on Latisha, denying new British Novice champion Katie Shaw and Cyloma Z another title. The Locarno sired, home-bred seven-year-old was a catch ride for Danielle, Latisha is usually ridden by owner Ann Scholes of Springs Equestrian Partnership, but Ann’s currently holidaying in Switzerland.

Charlotte Ash captured the Posh Paws International Dunglenn 148cm championship with her European pony championship ride Aughnashammer. “He’s awesome and has such a big heart, loads of canter, power and scope, and he never lets me down,” said Charlotte, 15, who ensured care to the last oxer – a bogey for several of the eight in the jump-off. “Everyone tried to cut in and came in on half a stride, I went wide and kept to an even seven strides.”

A moment of sadness and reflection took place before the presentation of the Dunglenn 148cm championship – named after top pony Dunglenn – the late Michael Mac’s Wembley winning ride.  Geoff Billington and George Babes led a fittng tribute to the late Scope director.

The Pure Feed Company Tiny Tots is always a crowd pleaser, and spectators were not disappointed as the tiniest of riders did their utmost to outpace each other, their determination matched by their excited ponies.

Newly crowned Primary 128cm champion Rachel Proudley doubled up to take the Tiny Tots title on Painted Lady – a surprise Christmas present – in a hotly contended jump-off that had spectators roaring encouragement.

Long-time leader Madison Heath, 9, had to settle for second on Rahanane Lady here, but gained HOYS qualification at her first attempt at this level when winning the 128cm qualifier on Red Alert III.

Tabitha Dean, who is based with Kerry Grimster, topped the 18 pony decider to take the Old School Bamburgh Pony British Novice Championship with Atlantic Hope II, a seven-year-old she has ridden for four months.

The Area 14 North Cumbria squad of Gail Smith (Wenge), Richard Nichol (Rhodanites Rowenberry), Jon Fletcher (Vote Z) and Jilly Francis (Medicinal Purpose) headed the Regional Teams Championship under team captain Linda Henarie. Area 21 Derbyshire came second with Area 24 Lincolnshire in third.
