Saturday 18 March 2017

Yesterday, Friday 17th March, saw Louise Saywell at the CSI 5* Saut Hermes give Great Britain a solid start with a 2nd place finish in the opening World Ranking Points class, the 1.45m two phase Prix du Grand Palais.  Her clear with Peiter VI, owned by James Hughes, in a time of 29.77 seconds saw them sit just behind Emanuele Gaudiano (ITA) with Carlotta 232 who took the top spot by breaking the finish line in 28.35 seconds.   It was a hard fought class with more than forty starters that came forward, seventeen of which jumped without penalty across both phases.

The next class of the day was the 1.45m two phase for 25 years & under riders and Great Britain shone once again in the form of Jessie Drea with Mullaghdrin Touch The Stars, a 12 year-old bay stallion which she owns with Lynne Humphries.   Her incredibly fast clear in a time of 31.21 seconds just couldn’t be caught and it was Swiss rider Laetitia du Couedic that managed to get the closest in 31.24 seconds to take 2nd place with Cheyenne 111.   Jack Whitaker, who won Individual Gold last year at the Pony European Championships, took 8th place with Emilie Machon and Michael Potter’s grey stallion Valentin R.

This afternoon’s crowd pleaser of a competition, the Le Saut Hermes 1.60m two round competition that sees riders pair up in teams of two was an incredible one to watch.  The packed grandstands were cheering on at almost a deafening pitch willing their riders home and it was Petronella Andersson (SWE) and Christian Ahlmann (GER) that took the main share of the prize money with their 1st place finish on a total of 4 penalties in a combined time of 79.98 seconds.  Louise Saywell with Carodalis 7, owned by Jorg Naeve, was paired with Ben Asselin (CAN) and Cool Feeling and their 5 penalty score in a time of 93.82 seconds saw them finish in 5th place.
