Emma-Jo Slater Secures Speedi-Beet HOYS Grade C Qualifier Win at Hertfordshire County Show

Fifty competitors came forward for the Speedi-Beet HOYS Grade C Qualifier held at Hertfordshire County Show on Saturday 23rd May and it proved to be a hard fought class which culminated in an exciting finish.
With just three direct qualifying tickets available for the Speedi-Beet HOYS Grade C Championship Final at Horse of the Year Show, the pressure was on each and every combination to produce a double clear as this would put them in with a good chance of securing a qualifying spot.
Just four double clears were produced from a seven horse jump off after a number of combinations faulted in the initial round of the class. The treble combination of fences caught many competitors out in round one, but spectators were to be treated to a thrilling jump off.
Emma-Jo Slater, aged 36, from High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire was the eventual winner of this qualifier with Kim Barzilay’s 6 year-old chestnut gelding Kimba’s Flamenco. Known for her quick but careful rounds, Emma-Jo needed to once again deliver a clean and fast result after being drawn fifth to go in the jump off with two double clears already posted ahead of her. Pushing for the time, Emma-Jo steered Kimba’s Flamenco immaculately round the course to finish with a double clear in 35.63 seconds, pipping their nearest rivals by just two hundredths of a second.
Commenting on her round, Emma-Jo said “Flamenco is quite a young horse, so I am delighted with how he went on Saturday. I really competed at Hertfordshire to give him experience on the County Show circuit, so to pull off a win was unexpected, I’m really pleased.”
Second place went to 44 year-old Damien Charles from Westerham, Kent and he was on board Andy Rothery’s 9 year-old bay mare Rockmount Alice. This combination set the pace early on in the jump off after producing their double clear in 35.65 seconds. This was to prove fast enough for not only a top two finish, but also a Championship Final place.
The third and final qualifying spot went to Richard Barton from Bradford, West Yorkshire with Gaye Hartley’s 7 year-old grey mare Donata. This combination secured their double clear in 36.70 seconds.

Horse of the Year Show 2015 will take place from the 7th – 11th October 2015 at Birmingham’s Genting Arena.
